I just read that the newest version you can't flash. The one with the Gears of War game on the back of the box. Is this true? Thats the version I just got. What about the Xtreme42 firmware that just came out?

Am I screwed?

It the new Hitachi technically can be flash, but it's extremely difficult. I'd doubt anyone here is doing it. You have to remove a chip which has hard black resin on it. Then you have to flash it with special hardware that few have access to. BTW getting the chip back on is supposed to be a real bitch too.

Shit. Do they still make the old drives or do all the new 360's come with this drive?
I better head down to Walmart and try to find the dustiest one there is and then return this one. Shit.

I know they don't make the old Hitachis anymore. I think they may still make MS28 Samsung which is the harder to flash Samsung. However, you can still find old drives in stores. I saw a MS25 Samsung in Target last week. Just avoid Best Buy. They always has the newest stock of video game systems.

Ok thanks Memnock. One other thing any other drive is ok and I won't need one of those sata cards to flash it, right? Just my PC and a SATA cable is what I have.

Well you need to have a SATA connection on your motherboard or you will have to buy a PCI SATA card.
