Hey guys, I had a browse through this forum and feel it's doing an awesome job helping people out. Keep up the good work guys.

Yesterday my computer got infected. First it was a spyware program called Amaena. Today AVG Free Scan has detected the trojan horse PSW.Generic2.RFG in the files piplafgv.dll and tojsmqik.dll in the /TEMP folder. I'm not quite sure how to go about cleaning my system without formatting. Two main problems that I have encountered as a result of the infection are:
- My internet explorer crashes as soon as it starts up, so I'm using Mozilla at the moment.
- There is an idle object sitting on my desktop that I can not remove. THe file name is CAXCGVLX. It claims to be 0 bytes. When I try deleting it, I get an error message saying "Can not read from source file or disk.

I need urgent help guys. I have heard the Trojan is a password stealer. Hope any of you can help. I'm going to post my HijackThis log file next. Thanks in advance.

Note: My McAfee subscription is over. So I can't run virus scans using that.

However, I would STRONGLY encourage a reformat and clean reinstallation. Password-stealers, along with backdoors, are nothing to dick around with. Change all your passwords, for EVERYTHING - banks, web mail, your system itself, etc. - and do it from a clean machine.

-Do you believe you own your computer and shouldn't be told what you can run and do? Then say *NO* to Microsoft Vista!
-Since half the questions here involve media problems, here ya go: Only use Verbatim or Taiyo-Yuden discs (get your TYs from Rima.com, not Supermediastore or meritline). Forget the rest, no matter what "brand" they sell under. Always burn at 4x speed regardless of the speed rating of this discs or your drive. If you have burn problems with these then you have to update your drive's firmware. For double-layer discs, only use Verbatim DVD+R DL and burn them at 2.4x speed.

Download VundoFix to your desktop.

Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
Click "Scan for Vundo".
Once it's done scanning, click "Remove Vundo".
You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES.
Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.

Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove.
In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button." when VundoFix appears at reboot.

After the restart, go here to download the trial version of AVG Anti-spyware.

Install and open AVGAS.
Click "Update" then click "Start update".
After updating, close AVGAS.
Note: Print or copy these instructions to Notepad and save them. You will be in safe mode and can't access the internet.
Restart your computer in safe mode(press F8 upon boot, select "Safe Mode" from menu and press Enter).
Open AVGAS and click "Scanner".
Click "Complete System Scan".
When it finishes scanning, set all items to "Quarantine".
Click "Apply All Actions".
Click "Save Report" and save it to the desktop.

Restart in normal mode.

Please post back with the contents of C:\vundofix.txt, the AVGAS report and a new HijackThis log.

Internet Explorer now runs. It still crashes though, but much less than before. There is still that issue with that mysterious object lying around on my desktop. I can't get rid of it.

Run a scan only with HijackThis, check these:

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {35F7813A-AF74-4474-B1DC-7EE6FB6C43C6} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\tikmdrqr.dll

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [snsokqg.dll] C:\WINDOWS\system32\rundll32.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\snsokqg.dll,ordkfqb

Close all windows except HijackThis, then click "Fix checked".

Note: Print or copy these instructions to Notepad and save them. You will be in safe mode and can't access the internet.

Restart in safe mode.

Show hidden files and folders.
Start > Control Panel > Folder Options > View tab > check "Show hidden files and folders".
Click Apply, then OK.

Delete that file off the desktop.
Locate and delete this file:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\snsokqg.dll

Empty the Recycle Bin and hide hidden files again.
Restart in normal mode.

If IE still crashes just post a new HijackThis log.
If IE is available:
Go here to run ActiveScan.
Click "Panda ActiveScan.
Fill in the form with your information.
After downloading, click My Computer to scan.
When it finishes, click "See Report".
Click "Save report" and save it to the desktop.
Post the log along with a new HijackThis log.

Ok, I did all what you told me to do. I am still unable to remove that 'hidden'/non-existent object on my desktop.

Internet Explorer seems to be working now without any serious problems. I ran Panda ActiveScan. Here's the log:

P.S. I just wanted to say I really appreciate all the help!!

What next, boss? I think the only problem left is that mysterious object sitting on my desktop (and also the small matter of making sure I'm clean of trojans, etc).

Go here and download CCleaner.
Note: If you do not want Yahoo! Toolbar uncheck the option when installing.
Open CCleaner.
Click Options > Advance > uncheck "Only delete files in Windows Temp folders older than 48 hours".
Close all windows.
Click Cleaner > Run Cleaner.

Restart in safe mode and delete these: (may have to show hidden files again)
C:\Documents and Settings\Dell User\Desktop\backups <--backup folder
C:\VundoFix Backups <--backup folder
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\pisuwuum.exe <--file
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\qomlihg.dll <--file
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\tikmdrqr.dll <--file

Then, attempt to delete the file off the desktop again. If you can't right-click the file and select Properties. Write down and tell me the full name and what type of file it is.

If all that is successful, your computer will be clean. :) We'll just need to clean the System Restore folder, but I'll wait to see if you can delete the file/s before posting the instructions for that.

I did all the instructions you told me to do. The 'object' however is still there. I can't remove it.

The file is called:
CAXCGVLX.

It doesn't have an extension. It claims to be 0 bytes. It's almost like as if nothing's there... but clearly it's sitting right there on my desktop. I can't pinpoint exactly when it appeared, but I feel it was somewhat right after my computer got infected.

Here's a picture of my desktop:

Thank you for the picture. I was going to ask for one if you wasn't successful in removing it. :)

Let try this.

Open HijackThis.
Click "Open the misc tools section".
Click "Delete a file on reboot..."
Locate the file and select it.
When prompted click Yes to restart your computer.

Let me know. :)

Nope, that didn't work too. It just rebooted normally. The object is still sitting there. Any idea what the hell it is?

I haven't a clue what it is. :)

Go here and download KillBox.

Note: print these instructions or copy to Notepad and save it, you will be in safe mode and can't access the internet.
Restart your computer in safe mode(press F8 upon boot, select "Safe Mode" from menu and press Enter).
Open Killbox.exe.
Check "Standard File Kill".
Beside the "Full Path of File to Delete" box, click the folder icon.
Locate and select the file.
Then, click the red button with a white X after you enter each file.
You will be prompted to confirm, click "Yes".

Let me know, again. :)

Nope. Didn't work - I got an error message saying "file doesn't seem to exist" or something like that.

I made an interesting observation though. When I go to Safe Mode, I am given 2 options of user accounts to sign in with. One of them is "Administrator" and the other is me (called "Dell"). When I go to my account ("Dell") the object is sitting there.

But here's the interesting part... when I go to the Administrator account in Safe Mode, there is no trace of the object whatsoever on my computer. I checked all over the place for it (including \Documents and Settings\Dell User\Desktop --> that's where it's supposed to be) but it's not there. I found that very odd.

I've been using computers for a long time. I've never seen anything like this before. I'm probably going to format my computer soon... but I'm trying to postpone that for as long as I can because it's a hassle to find a backup medium to backup all my songs, etc.

So any more ideas left ??

Yeah, I've got a few more ideas. :) Let's try to scan it. Since it's showing 0 file size, I'm not sure it can be scanned, but can't hurt to try.

Go to Jotti's malware scan.
Beside "File to upload and scan" area click "Browse"
Locate and select the file.
Click "Submit".
If successful, copy/paste the results to Notepad and save them.
Post the results in your next reply.

I got the following message on a white page:

"The file you uploaded is 0 bytes. It is very likely a firewall or a piece of malware is prohibiting you from uploading this file."

I tested with other files - the scanner does work. But it is unable to scan this particular file.

I'm going out on a limb here, but let's check for a rootkit.

Download F-Secure Blacklight (blbeta.exe) to the desktop from here.

Open it and click Accept Agreement.
Click "Scan".
After the scan is complete, click "Next", then "Exit".
It will create a log on the desktop named "fsbl-xxxxxxx.log" (the xxxxxxx will be the date and time of the scan)

Download Rootkit Revealer from here.
Create a new folder, named RKR, in C:\
Extract the files to the new folder.
Open RootkitRevealer.exe.
Close all other windows and click the "Scan".
Important: Leave the computer idle while the scan runs.
When the scan is finished, click File > Save... to save the text file to the C:\RKR\ folder.

Post back with the Blacklight log and the RKR log.

FYI: I have a file simlar to that on my desttop. It has a created date of 10/2005. I only see it if I unhide protected files. I did some extensive lookup on it. Seem others have this sort of file also. Always starts with a "C" is 8 charactors long and ends with a "." Saw a link to a program that is supposed to deal with it but I never heard of it before so be warned I know nothing about the program. Here is some interesting reading. Read page 2 through 4. Espically page 4. This file has not caused me any problems.
