Ok, what I have:
PS2 ver7, SCPH-39001
network adapter
HDD that came with FFXI

Here is what I want to do. I want to put in a mod chip (eyeballing the DMS4 S.E. Pro, good choice?) so I can play backups (my nephue stays with us, and he is hard on discs and does not take care of them). I still play FFXI. I wouldn't mind putting in a larger HDD in my PS2, and possibly back up some of my favorite games to it so they load faster. I need my system to pass the DNAS check (remember, I still play FFXI). I remember a topic on another board a long time ago stating that FFXI checks the HDD to make sure it's a genuine one that came with FFXI to install. Some stated they thought Sony did something to the HDD BIOS? I think I can get around that by putting both my current PS2 HDD and the new one in a PC and use a program like Norton Ghost to take care of that. But does anyone know if FFXI looks at the HDD on the DNAS check? If so I will be limited to the 40GB in there, and copy very few games to it. Has anyone else been in the same situation, or know anyone that has been too? Thank you in advance for looking at this thread/posting your thoughts :)

i can not answer questions on FFXI as i do not have or play that game.

as far as the chips, that i can answer.
1. The DMS4 Pro SE is the only chip i know right now with built in software (ToxicOS V0.41) for running a hard drive. And a great choice for a chip
2. The Crystal Chip V1.1 after you download and flash the hacked BIOS is the only chip i know right now that will auto patch the DNAS of a back up game for online play
also a very good chip choice but you would also need to get HD Loader to run your hard drive.

neither of those will help you if the FFXI system has a way to scan your PS2 for the original FFXI hard drive.
That is something that i hope someone who plays it will be able to answer

I did some browsing around on the net and found out that HD Loader claims that it does not interfere with FFXI, as well as running both on a PS2 with a larger HDD. So now my plans are to scrape up enough dough to get the mod chip :) I did get a new laser pcb to install off ebay, as mine won't read PS1 games anymore, and tends to be more picky then my nephues PS2. $9 after shipping is alot better then almost $55 before shipping to me, and I don't mind opening my PS2 and doing some soldering (took 4 years of electronics in high school, and can solder quite well). I figure since I was able to replace the power socket in my laptop two times without any problems, I shouldn't have any problems wielding my soldering iron around in my PS2, lol. Thanks for your reply steimy, it was much appreciated.

sure man. If you want to run a hard drive
then you need to get a DMS4 Pro SE chip for sure.
there are only a couple games i have found so far that it has
not been able to run off the hard drive like F&F Tokyo Drift and
Hot Shots Golf Fore.

Yeah, I have come to love my HDD. I use it to back up my mem card all the time. Helps out if I screw up on a game and get far enough to autosave, just to find out I didn't really want to do what I did. Plus it makes it where I don't have to buy more mem cards to hold tons of game saves or delete ones I might use later :)
