I am using AnyDVD 6.0.9.0 to turn off any protection on DVDs. I then back it up using DVD Shrink 3.2.0.15 without any compression. Next, I burn them onto TDK DVD+R DL at 2.4x on my Sony DRU-820A burner.

Every process completes just fine and I am able to watch the movie on my DVD player. Once the movie gets past an hour though (one movie got to 1 hour 13 minutes, another to 1 hour 36 minutes), the movie freezes.

I've looked around on the forums and I am thinking this is due to two problems.

1. Media. I read from a post that Dunker recommends Verbatim DVD+R DL for burning, but I've been an avid fan of TDK and it's never failed me. Could this be where the problem is stemming from?

2. Booktyping. Dunker also said in a post that booktyping could be the cause, but then said that DL discs usually get booktyped automatically.

If the problem was booktyping, wouldn't my DVD player be unable to read it from the very beginning? Please offer any suggestions, comments, and advise. Thanks in advance!

this is the classic example of poor media! Dunken gave you great advise..... if you are burning DL disks..... then get Verbatim.... they are the best disks out there for compatibility and quality! You won't get any skipping, freezing or pixelations from their disks. TDK is not a good compatible or quality disk for most players/burners!

Yessssssssssss!

next is booktyping....... first off you must understand about booktyping. read this:
http://k-probe.com/bitsetting-booktype-faq.php
http://www.booktypefaq.com/

next ..... can you set your drive to booktyping?

@ rnguyen

if I could just ad my $0.02 regarding TDK. I had issues with these disks skipping, freezing and just generally being unwatchable... but only on certain dvd players. They played fine on my player at home, but would not play on the player at work, or on 50% of my co-workers players in their homes. At first I thought it was something I was doing, until I realized it was just that brand of media... I never changed anything except I started using verbatim and have never had a problem since. Try those TDK's on some other players and you might find that you were lucky to get 1 hour of good playback from them. Take the advice of IHoe and others... get better media and your problems will solve themselves.

I second what IHoe said. The only thing you need to succeed in here is the ability and willingness to learn. I have never seen anyone refuse to teach what they know in this site... as long as the person is willing to listen. Welcome.

What burning engine did you used to burn? You don't need to use DVD Shrink if your going to use DVD+R DL to backup. Simply have DVDFab Decrypter (FREE) or RipIt4Me (FREE) to rip the DVD/movie to the HD first, then have ImgBurn to burn the VIDEO_TS folder. No need to transcode (or DVD Shrink) since you're using DVD+R DL disc.

ImgBurn will handle layer break better than any burning applications out there. ImgBurn will burn any ISO image or VIDEO_TS folder (file) flawlessly.

Best of luck!!

Is it better than Nero? Or are we just talking about free apps?

I have a DL burner, but have never used the DL capability. I am going to this weekend however, and I want to use the best app for the job.

Hey all, thanks for the quick responses. I am using Nero to burn the backup into DVD. I had just bought a bunch of TDK DL discs, but I guess it's time to return those and stick to Verbatim via everyone's recommendation. Thanks again!

Regarding booktyping:

I read the instructions to set the booktyping settings in Nero found at:

http://k-probe.com/bitsetting-booktype-faq.php

My recorder was set to booktype DVD-Rom. The website instructs to set it to Automatic. Is that what I should do or should DVD-Rom be okay? Also under the options for my recorder in Nero is a checkbox labeled "Write extended lead-out for double-layer discs". It is currently unchecked. Should I check this box?

I went to my local Fry's and returned the TDK media. Turns out they don't carry Verbatim at all. Any idea why this is?

there are plenty of places to get Verbatim disks: Office Depot, Office Max, Circutcity, ComUSA, Radio Shack, Best Buy and of course the online stores: supermediastore.com, Meritline.com, Rima.com, Newegg.com
