When I built my computer last year, I installed two DVD optical drives - a Plextor PX 716A (retail)and a NEC ND-3520A (OEM.) The Plextor came with Roxio Easy Media Creator Basic DVD home but the NEC didn't come with software. Both drives have worked very well but now I have a problem with the Plextor. I just purchased AVG Anti-virus (7.5)but couldn't install it because of a conflict with the Roxio software. I uninstalled the Roxio and installed the AVG but now the Plextor won't write (burn?) a disk but it does read fine. I can burn files using the NEC without a problem but I would like to be able to use the Plextor as well. I do not burn music files nor am I interested in movies, but I want to be able to make use of the DVD media to store picture and other large files. Do I need to purchase a retail version of something like Roxio or Nero? Can anyone help? As you can tell, I am new to this part of the business and would appreciate any help that you can offer.

Reinstall Roxio to see if that works and reinstalls or repairs the ASPI layer. AVG may have seen a conflict with Roxio that will not appear if Roxio is installed afterwards. The drives both use playback software common to the computer, but you need recording software to get the drives to record.

If you choose to switch to Nero, use Nero's clean up utility to remove Roxio. Roxio makes tens of thousands of changes to the registry, and uninstalling the software does not remove them all. The remaining "mouse droppings" continue to conflict with Nero and other recording software, particularly packet-writing applications.

Try to reinstall Roxio first to see if the Plextor drive will begin to record again.

Thanks for the help, JoeRyan. Later this evening I will reinstall the Roxio and see if everything works as expected. I'll post the results then.

I followed JoeRyan's suggestion and reinstalled Roxio using the Plextor installation disk. Once again, I can burn files using the Plextor optical drive and as far as I can determine, the AVG antivirus program is working as expected. Thanks for the help, JoeRyan.
