DVD to AVI Question from beginner

Hi all
Is there a simple piece of freeware in existence that allows you
copy a DVD to AVI format and is there a piece of freeware that can
break the AVI file into smaller segments.

There seems to be lots of pieces of software that do AVI to DVD.

I would suggest first taking a look at this excellent guide:

Then for dvd to AVI use http://www.autogk.me.uk/ including with this link is a tutorial and settings for output AVI file.
