I am now seriously considering purchasing a PSP, seeing their very affordable price tag, and the possibilities brought about by hacking and such. Portable PS1 cames, etc, seem very appealing. I have done a little research, and it seems the JAP version on the PSP has a somewhat better screen, and there is a large supply of them on UK eBay, but I wanted to ask a couple of things first.

1. Should I get the JAP version, I get a better screen, but the thing is in Japanese, right? Now, I'm taking lessons, but there is no way in hell I could read Japanese to save my life right now. Does it have English as an option, or an enablable option? What about firmware; is the PSP's firmware universal, ie. do I get the same firmware as the guys in NA? And the film region protection; doesn't the UK share the same region as Japan? And games do not have this protection, correct? And, are there any major, glaring disadvantages to getting a JAP PSP?

2. If I get a 1.51 version PSP, I can upgrade to, like, 2.60, and then step down to 1.50, can't I?

3. With a JAP PSP, what are the chances of me getting the useless PSP motherboard, against the chances of getting one in a UK PSP?

4. White or black? =)

I really appreciate any answers. Thanks in advance.

If you get a jap psp and install an american firmware I dont think itll change the language because back a while ago when 2.0 first came out I installed the JP update and the language remained the same on my psp. It might be different now but im not 100 percent sure. As for the region's Im not sure what region what the uk is. But the games are not region encoded however UMD movies are.

If you get a 1.51 psp you can upgrade to 2.6 and downgrade from there but you would need a copy of GTA:LCS unpatched and its alot safer and easier to downgrade 2.0.

It depends on if the psp's are used or new mainly. You usually have a better chance of not getting a ta-082 or 2.8x with a used psp.

White psp's are awesome lookin. I have the US black psp but am thinking of buying all the white parts from a JP psp and convert mine.

Thanks for the quick reply. I agree that it might be safer in that respect buying used, but I honestly don't trust anyone on eBay, and I really like to know somethings history if its been used. I mean, I wouldn't want to buy a PSP off someone who has done what I intend to do to my one when I get it.

Perhaps someone with a JAP PSP can clarify?

It seems a lot of people are too lazy to mess about with firmware and just want to pay the extra for a 1.5 version. I like doing things that hard way (and by extension; cheap way). =)

Yes there is an option to change the language to English.

Thanks. Now I can rest easy in the fact that I will be able to read what I'm doing if I buy a JAP version. Though it is more than a little odd, the Japanese very rarely support other languages with software.

K, for instance:

Would it be a good deal for £120/150? And am I likely (I know its not certain by any means) to get crappy motherboard or crappy screen?
