i have a dell 4700c slim computer with a sony dvd burner . my burner is a 8x abd it works fine with 8 x dvds but when i burn with a 16x dvd it always uses 2x max and it is really slow. is there anyways to fix this or do i need to by a new burner. thanks

Sounds like the burner isn't fully recognizing the discs.
Which brand are you using?

If a firmware update is available may fix this.

Have you checked Dell's site for one?

What the model of the burner?

I guess with your firmware update it is now able to burn 16x media.....and maybe DL media..... but as always... firmware updates tries to have as much media recognition as it can have..... it's possible that some media won't be recognized properly so it will try to write onto it generically! Maybe this is why the slow burning speeds. You'll have to find the right media for your drive to burn if your going to use it successfully. I would start with the best media out there: Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim. stick with those. just my 2 cents.
