I'm going to give it a shot myself tomorrow. I had intended on trying to find an older drive to flash, but enough people are reporting success with 0078fk for me to want to give it a shot.

I paid a guy to do it. I was there when he done it.
He bought a PCI-SATA card to do it.
Used Slax 2.0 CD to get the drive recognised in windows.
Then used Maximus' Firmware Toolbox 3.0 and flashed it.
There's a tutorial on Xbox-Scene forums.

I've got 11 0078 drives just sitting here waiting for me to flash them but I'm on here answering questions all day so I haven't even gotten around to them yet. I have done 2 so far and they were all simple. Mad props to Maximus.

Yeah that sucks. You could have just order a VT6421 SATA card for $15 and would have been set.

i have an 0078fk hitachi drive also, ive been thinking of/trying to flash it. im using a SATA cable i got off newegg and hooking it into a SATA port on my mboard, while the drive is still in the xbox itself(using the xbox's power cable). im also using slax 2.0 as ive seen in a few tutorials. im doing exactly what it says on xbox scene and i get it into ModeB but when i go to reset my computer and boot into windows regulary it seems like my pc isnt detecting my hitachi drive.

any tips? or suggestion on what i could do to make it detect it?
in many tutorials they have a SATA card in the things you need but i figured i wouldnt need that since i have about 4 empty SATA ports on my mboard, is this right?

im currently working on flashing a 0078fk hitachi drive.

ok just found out that slax has to support my mobos chipset to not have to get that card, where can i get a list of what slax supports.?

just put your drive in b-mode with your motherboard.. if it won't work then it won't work. if it does work then you don't have to buy a PCI sata card.
edited by ddpfor some instructions :) and sata compatibility

ah, but i can get my drive in modeB its just after i reset my computer (at slax login screen) and i boot into windows normally it shows no signs of the drive on the pc. at the same time my drive is still in ModeB. i dont understand, it seems like if it cant detect my drive then it shouldnt be able to put it into modeb..

im currently working on flashing a 0078fk hitachi drive.

if you are sure it is in mode b then check your device manager. if the drive is listed in your device manager and not in "my computer" then right click then properties and click the tabs at the top until you find an option to "populate" the drive as this will make it visible in my computer. also i have heard of people pressing the eject button while windows is loading also, you can give that a try. hope this helps.

Maximus released an update to yesterday's 360 Firmware Toolbox(info) v3.1:
Quote:

Maximus - FIRMWARE TOOLBOX V3.1B (With C4E/Garyopa Hitachi 1.7)
The Credit on the Hitachi 1.7 is to C4E for his original Hitachi Jitter Fix and to Garyopa for layout those changes on other versions

What's new/fixed (since v3.1):
* Added: Missing File was causing troubles to users with Classic Mode.

On this release I am including a missing file that was causing problems to users that used the option of the external flashers mainly users with drives 59 and older, none 78 users complain

We are on the same line to having 1 tool for all hitachi versions and to allow that we already have figured out how to solve the USB-SATA issues and some SIL issues to, so on next versions you can use that devices (for versions prior to 59) whithout glitches.

Meanwhile since this version is not USB-SATA friendly you can use the "external flashers" option or use the C4E release earlier wich is MS-DOS (if your drive is 59 or lower) and this release if you have 78/79
