How do you download and play a game...at the same time?

Finally i took up the courage and connected my Xbox 360 to Live. Got a silver subscription (+1 month free Gold subs). Marketplace is amazing. So for a trial i started to download Eragon trailer. And it started downloading and all was fine. Then i decided to play CoD 3. The game started and asked for an update to be installed, i declined to update the game. Then the messaged popped up that i was disconnected from Live and that my download has stopped.

- How can i download stuff from Marketplace and still be able to play any game without it disconnecting from Live?

- Also, i am planning to have a go at Gears of War online. But i heard that the game requires an update and that it blocks the system from Live (and maybe brick it too?). Is it true? Will the update be safe for my system?

the game updates that you do at the moment are fine (well i have updated mine and have no problems on my flashed box)
With the downloading, it will always stop when you play a game thats live enabled cause it assumes you want to use all your bandwidth for teh game, when you stop playing the download will start again automatically.
As for the Gears of war question, i have been playing mine (backed up copy) online for over a month now and have no problems what so ever

i did the update for GoW and it didnt affect anything on my system (except i lost FEAR demo i was downloading). Online play is cool.
