Hi i have a Model 39001 PS2. OK heres what is wrong. My ps2 will turn on and goes to the system configuration screen, i press the eject button and only sometimes will it open, but it doesnt open all the way so i took off the lid and pushed the tray back in I put in a disk and the disk doesnt spin. it turns about 1/4 inch and stops, the laser moves up and down like 2 times but i cant see any red light coming from the laser. If i pull the tray open and press reset the tray the laser will rest it its beging spot. Any help would be greatly appretiated. Also when the tray is all the way in and i press eject it doesnt do anything no noise nothing, but if i pull the tray out and press reset it will close the tray and the blue light will flash. :/

Are you using SM with the front cover removed? I had a problem like this before, was a pain in the ass to fix but after I figured it out it was quite simple actually.

towards the bottom of that guid is fixing a problem disc tray. Not sure if it will help.

Only problem i ever had with my older model was that i would press eject, they tray would come half way out and then close
I fixed this by turning off the PS2 while it was ejection before the tray went back in. I then GENTLY pulled it to it's fully open position. then turned it back on and pressed eject. If that did not work then you would turn it off and GENTLY push the tray to it's fully closed position, then turn it on and press eject

you should really not be pulling and pushing your tray manually or you are bound to break the teeth that pushes it in and out.
you do that and you will have to replace the drive.

Only other thing i know is if you were inside the PS2 and somehow
you knocked the silver ribbon cable from the power/eject button loose on either end.

I thought about the ribbon cable as well, at the end of the post, koolyoe says 'if i pull the tray out and press reset it will close the tray and the blue light will flash.' If the light is flashing, there is a connection.

Ok well i got the tray alligned, it will open and close with the button NICE. But not about the laser it will move to place, the disk will spin about 1/4 turn and then stop. I dont think there is ne red light coming from the laser itself. The laser moves up and down like trying to read any suggestions?

If there is no read light then the laser is not working.
I think you will need to have a pro look at it.

How are you watching the laser move up and down? Is your PS2 pulled apart? Also, you shouldn't be looking at the laser beam:P

yes my ps2 is pulled apart. and i put the ps2 in a dark room, and turned the ps2 on and watched for a red laser beam, nothing, put my hand over the laser eye to see a red light nothing, finally i looked into it from an angle no red light. if i roll the laser to the back and turn it on it will move to the front again and move up and vertically like it pumps 2 times, and the disk will only spin about a 1/4 turn.

How long have you had your PS2? Was it a refurb or used when you bought it? Sounds like your laser died. I'd say wait until right after christmas and go down to gamestop...Buy a refurb, they come with a warranty from the store. Have you done anything to put extra stress on your laser?

Just get new laser... easy to fit!

but sounds to me like motor is gone coz even if laser doesnt red the disc the disc would keep spinning....

laser = £30 - £40

ps2 from ebay = £20+

your choice...

You can put extra stress on lasers several ways...Most involve backups. If you only used original games and dvds in your ps2, it should be fine. Bad quality media can shorten the lasers life span. Now, you say the disc spins 1/4 of a turn...It's not even making a full revolution? Can you hear the motor? Is it trying? ripper brought up a point I never thought of...It could be the laser motor and not the laser itself, but I don't think so if it turns at all. If it can make the 1/4 turn, it is still functioning at least a little. How fast does it spin?

The spin-up (when the spindle starts to spin) is the moment when the most stress is put on the motor. Once the disc is spinning the inertia makes the effort much less. If your motor cannot produce enough power to complete the spin-up, it cannot work. Blow out the system as good as you can with compressed air. Also, try helping the spindle spin by twisting it during spin-up. I'm not sure what the problem is.
