This PS2's laser and drive are pretty much screwed, I have a slimline with SM3.6, and love it. But I was wondering if I can use a firewire HDD on this 30001 PS2 and get it to work? I'm sure I can adjust the laser to read something, like Swap Magic if I need to load anything up or what not, but not too sure.

IDE internal and USB external are the only two hard drives
i have ever seen anyone use with a PS2
And you need the software to run the hard drives as well.
Internal = HD Loader or HD Advanced
External = USB Extreme

you would be best with an external for what you want to do. Internal is faster but you would have to take it out of the PS2 and install it into the PC every time you want to add or delete a game.
Here is the big problem. If it will not read discs how will you get it to read the hard drive software to run the hard drive in the first place?

unless there is a memory card exploit that you can use instead of the above discs, this whole idea would not work if the PS2 can not read a disc.

I heard that the external USB is pretty slow, I figured the FIREWIRE would be a bit faster.

As far as getting the software loaded, I also have a slim PS2 with SwapMagic 3.6. Would it be possible to get the boot stuff loaded to this hard drive using this PS2, and then be able to connect it to the other PS2? The network adapters are pretty expensive these days.
