Why can't I connect to the internet

I have the 20 gb console. I'm running a Netgear network. The cable modem/router is in the basement. From there, my pc on the 1st floor connects to the internet via a wireless card. My pc in my bedroom (2nd floor) connects via a wireless card, also. My personal laptop, and my brother's mac notebook connect wirelessly also (obviously).
I've tried running an ethernet cable from either my notebook or desktop to the PS3 (since the 20 gb can't go wireless) but all I receive is a limited/no connectivity message on the PC.
Can anyone help?

I avoid Dlink because the software when you get more complex networks gets very unuserfriendly. There singnal that you can get with their routers is very week, their routers tend to become slow when you get multiple devices hooked up to them, I have also found that you are more likly to have network timeouts with dlink routers than a Cysco Systems (Linksys). I have had several horrible times with DLink and know several people who have also had a hard time with their routers and I feel very strongly about tis. I feel that Linksys wireless products are at alot higher quality. Don't get me wrong DLINk is a good company there products are just lower quality, than you will find with a brand like Linksys!

I'm not sure about the 20GB PS3, but I don't think it has any WiFi (or built in wireless internet), so you'll have to connect via an Ethernet cable. I got mine (PS3 60GB) with wireless built-in. Since I have DSL connection, all I have to do is get a wireless router (Linksys Broadband Router SpeedBooster) from Best Buy and goes from there.

You are right and wrong!
There is no bulit in WiFi in the 20GB, but you can get a Wirelsess gameing adapter!

alright, i just bought a 60gig, and returned the 20. Now im trying to connect through WIFI, but i have no idea how to do it(settings).
I get to the settings screen, select Wireless, then hit SCAN, but after that im not sure what to do. Can someone walk me through how to establish a connection step by step, it would be much appreciated.

Also i have another question not really related to wifi or anything, but i was just wondering if it was better to put the PS3 vertically, or horizontally. And when you turn it off, should you leave it on Standby?

Holy shite! I abandon this thread because no one responded in a couple of days, I check back tonight, and there are a bunch of responses lol.
Firstly, I stand my PS3 vertically. It gets way too hot laying it horizontally. I have my PS3 on top of my TV center (thank god for wireless controllers), with plenty of space between it and the stereo receiver. It still gets hot, but not as hot as before.
Secondly, I usually leave it in standby mode (where the red light is still on). The only time I turn it off (via the switch in the back), is when I won't be home for a while. Otherwise, shutting the system off by holding the PS button on the controller is enough for me.
Back to my original problem. The limited/no connectivity message has been solved. I bridged a connection between my wireless connection with my LAC (or was it with the 1394 connection?). Now, when my desktop and PS3 are on together, both recognize each other. Additionally, I'm using an ethernet cable to connect the two (before, I used a crossover cable but that didn't do anything).
Even with all that said, I still can't get online with the PS3 :( I was able to update the system via the internet (Settings > System Update > Update via Internet) but I can't connect to the PS network or internet browser. It's very frustrating!
I was considering copping out and getting a USB wireless adapter but I thought those USB adapters require an OS like Windows XP etc. Windows isn't on the PS3.
How does that game adapter work? Is it just like any other router except this is purely for gaming systems? FYI: I don't have any cable wires/modem going into my bedroom. So if this game adapter requires a direct internet connection via the cable modem, it's not gonna work (I'm 2 floors up from the cable modem).

I was just wondering how good the wireless adaptor is in the ps3?
I purchased a NETGEAR router/modem to go wireless but unless the ps3 is very close it hardly gets signal
I took that one back and bought the more exspensive one but still the same weak signal!!
Is this a common problem?

Did you get a router+modem? If so those suck... It is better to have both a router and a modem. I am using my PS3 with my lyksys router from over 70 feet away threw 9 walls and I get a signal of 70%. The adapter is very good!

Hi D-link routers are good dont avoid them.
Try a crossover cable.

D-Link routers are pieces of gray shit! They have poor signal and don't network well with off brand adapters!
The best routers are NetGear, Lynksys, and Apple Airport

sorry to interupt i also have a problem connecting to the internet, i have a laptop. wireless modem that is connected to my laptop via usb. i have run a cable from ps3 to laptop and bridged connection between the local area network and the wireless network as i was instructed by someone earlier. i still have the same problem as before, when i start to setup online in network setting on ps3 it tells me that a network cable is unplugged and dosn't proceed past where it says easy or custom on wired connections. can anyone help, i have been trying to connect for ages

after fiddling around a bit more i found that when i did a connection test it succeeded in obtaining an ip address, but timed out trying to connect to the internet server, any ideas would be appreciated

If you can do that do it! Wired always works best! It is faster too. Wireless networking can get very complicated!

My PS3 says that the IP Address Obtaining, then it says (I don't but it has to do with Getaway Time error) why is that?
