For several years I have been using Norton Internet Security and have kept updating it because I find it user friendly and am not too concerned if it slows my computer a bit.
I also have Spyware Doctor. Snag with this, it does not automatically update.
Soon my subscription to Norton expires and I am considering changing to Kaspersky as it always seems to get a good write-up.I don't mind paying.
I would like to know from someone who uses Kaspersky whether it is easy to understand and user-friendly. And does it auto-update.

While kapersky tests great I found it to cause wierd boot problems with my pc, I realize that was Isolated to my pc but afterwards I starting using freeware and have never had a virus since. I use AVG 7.5, windows defender, adaware personal, spywareblaster, spywareguard, and k9 anti spam this collection of software doesn't drain my resources as does Norton consider it they are free you can take them out for a test run and if you don't like them buy another suite you prefer.

Hi,

Check this out:

KIS is great software (the best all in one internet security out there)and doesn't really take much resources compared to others, though freeware will do the same job about as good. Its your opinion that matters at the end of the day.

The thread re freeware is an amazing labour of love, packed with loads of security program info, there is such a lot of hard work put into it by rav009. Congratulations for sharing it.

What I would like is to have frequent automatic updates, not relying on me to do them, and I presume that you do not get this with free programs. That is why I have Norton and am looking at Kaspersky, I am willing to pay for them.
I am still interested in Kaspersky, my concern is whether it is easy to use and understand for someone like me who is not a computer wizard.

Hi Suko :)

Thank you for your kind words, your welcome. As for auto updates, every app listed that runs in real time will auto update, so there's no need to pay for Norton or Kaspersky. Personally they should be enough for anyone, I use NOD32 (paid for) + Comodo Personal firewall (free) myself, never had any problems, on all my other machines I run AVG free + Zone Alarm free or Comodo, again I stay clean from nasties & for free.

Kaspersky IS is easy to use once you get the hang of it and it is very powerful, however the same thing goes for the free combo; I advise you to stick with the freeware, ultimately the choice is yours.

Cheers.

Yours Truly; Rav

One last question, is there any point in keeping Spyware Doctor?

Nope, theres no need to keep Spyware Doctor, you'll be using a free app which will do the same job :-)

To end this thread, I have abandoned Norton Internet Security 2006 and installed Kaspersky Internet Security and am very happy about it. The computer has speeded up and I am finding the Kaspersky user-friendly.
To Nortons credit, after installing Kaspersky and running a full scan nothing was found.

I am grateful to you for giving all the info I could want re free software, but I like the idea of the best program which will do everything and don't mind paying. So Kaspersky it was and I am very pleased I did it as I can understand it and see it updating all the time and scanning going on all the time. The initial scan of the whole computer took over an hour and a half.
The computer runs faster and is more pleasant to use.
How odd that the two most popular programs are so inferior.
