I used the latest versions of Ripit, FixVTS, and Shrink, and while they would let me rip the flick, when I go to play it back on HDD (PowerDVD6), the movie randomly skips ahead a few seconds, and if you choose rewind, it will randomly jump back to an earlier point in the movie, and then continue skipping ahead randomly.
The "skipped" content IS there though, so I figured it was just due to an older version of PowerDVD...not the case. I threw it on a disc with Nero, and the same problems happen on all three DVD players in my house, including my DVD-ROM drive.
I've never experienced a problem like this since I started backing-up movies 2 years ago. The problem not only occurs in burnt disc form, but in rip form also, even though I know the content that it randomly skips is actually present (because it doesn't always skip in the same place).
Any ideas?

Yeah, (based on link provided) I occasionally use DVDFab/VobBlanker (not mentioned in link)/Shrink to rip movies, but ever since I discovered Ripit and it's "one-click" mode, I have more or less just used that.
In everyones opinion, what have you all found to be the most universally reliable combination of apps- free or not?

I just found this thread on the official Ripit4Me forums, which alludes to it not being a problem on our end at all...
http://forum.digital-digest.com/showthre...370af9f&t=75661
This thread suggests that some of us may have bought factory defective copies, and this makes sense, as all subsequent movies have copied just fine, and given the publisher, I see no likely indication of latest-greatest anti-piracy technology unbeknown to us as the culprit.

Brand of dvd's used & your burn speed? I know, simple questions but in the end alot of problems relate to these.

We never stop learning.

The problems I am referring to are also present in the ripped HDD playback, so the problem obviously precedes burn speed issues and disc brands. It's more fundamental than that.
I only ever tried to rip the movie only, and not the full disc, and the disc copy I generated which also exhibited the same issues was on a single layer Imation DVD+R 16X disc, recorded on an NEC ND-3550A with 1.Y6 firmware, and +R bitsetting set to DVD-ROM, and a record speed dropped to 12X.

@DGrady

not likely your media and burn speed are the problem in this specific case since, as you say, even the ripped version still on the hard drive exhibits the skipping problem. a bad pressing? does the original play without problem?

however, i will add that most people on this forum suggest taiyo yuden, verbatim, or sony (made in japan) disks. you can use dvd recognition software (free) and discover that many other brands (possibly including imation) are made by cmc and considered inferior.

also, most people recommend burning at one-half the allowable speed, e.g. 16x should be burned at 8x.

i realize you haven't reported any problems with your media or burn speed in the past, but just for future reference and others reading this thread, since different burners and stand alone players exhibit different sensitivities and quirkiness with the lower quality and higher speed burned disks.

I had a similar problem with this film. The entire intro, when Jet Li fights the three foreigners, plays just fine. When the title appears however, the it freezes and is unable to skip forward at all.

i'm thinkin, you all must have bad prints or something to that effect. i backed up this one very, very easily & have no play back probs. I did not even have to use VobBlanker. This one was very straight forward. Method: dvddecrypter to hd, DVD Shrink "(movie only)", burnt to disc automaticaly with Nero from shrink. hope this helps

I was able to rip this movie with DVD Shrink and it works beautiful for me, all I did was leave the english speaking language and thats it. took off everything else, so when i play it back on a stand alone, the movie starts right away with english language....

When u do it with Shrink dont open the drive image open it through re-author go to the drive and open then just double click on the movie, after it scans it go to the compression settings, and walla, take off what ever you dont want and back up, its that simple and when playing back it should not give u any prob.....

Ironic because I just got this movie yesterday and backed it up this morning. When I checked mine, it was perfectly fine just like any other copy. I used Alkohol's guide, but did not use VOBlanker. I just used DVDFabDecrypter to rip the whole DVD and then used Nero to copy it.

I backed up this movie two ways:
1)anydvd version 6.0.9.9 with clonedvd2
2)anydvd with Nero recode2

Both methods produced a great backup which played flawlessly on my set top DVD player. Your problem maybe media, write speed, player , or a combination of the three.

Not a fan of either Memorex or TDK, I like using either Verbatim or Sony which have been great for me so far.

You're using 16x rated media and in my opinion 12x is still too fast (especially if the media is of poor quality), try to stick to a burn/write speed of 4x or 1/2 the rated of the media...so for 16x media try burning at 8x.

You don't mention playing disks that you've backed up in the past playing well in your player, but some players are very picky as to what media they'll play. Look in the manual and see what they recommend you use, if it's a older player you could think about getting a newer one that plays all formats or you could try booktyping DVD+R disks as DVD-ROMs in increase compatibility. Here'e some info on booktyping... http://www.k-probe.com/bitsetting-booktype-faq.php

Last, you should also make sure your burners firmware is upto date, if not update it to help it with recognizing your media. You can use DVD Decrypter to check for you and direct you to an update, here's how..

Thanks for your input johnl123, and please do not mis-interpret this reply, I mean no (none, nil naughta) disrespect, but I have burnt many(many) dvd's. I mainly use memorex (some maxell, phillips and benq(way back when))and this is the first problem I have encountered in my...collection. I use the LG GSA H10A and GSA H22L. All firmware up to date. My set top players are an old Goldstar DV4221NC(my first DVD player and it plays everything I've thrown at it...even dual layers) I had a toshiba sd4900 (it doesn't do well with dual layers) then I got the LG LDA530. It worked good for about a year then stopped playing dualies. Now I have samsung H860 which plays everthing (though not fond of the blue light). I'll give AnyDVD and clone a try...ttfn

@Snipes_

No offense taken buddy:)

The reason why I stated what I did about the media you mention (maxell excluded) is because it was most likely made in Taiwan.

I try and avoid the Taiwan made disks because:
One thing to keep in-mind is that you never really know where these disks are being made, just because you keep buying the same brand doesn't mean that they were all manufactured in the same facility using the same reliable process/chemical formula (Many different companies can buy the rights to use a NAME and stick it on their disks). This tends to hold true for disks that state maufactured in Taiwan, you should look for and purchase disks made in Japan instead if possible. Disks made in japan tend to be manufactured in the same facility (for the most part) using very good quality chemicals, the process is always the same and very reliable.

It could be that you got a bad batch of disks from who knows who in Taiwan?
Check out this site for more info if you care to, the info given can help with producing better backups that will last... http://www.digitalfaq.com/media/dvdmedia.htm

Also, as I stated above in my opinion 12x is still too fast (especially if the media is of poor quality), try to stick to a burn/write speed of 4x or 1/2 the rated of the media...so for 16x media try burning at 8x.

Cheers...

Thanks for the link. My media is 3rd rate...but like I said I have had zero problems...all my 400plus play fine except this one.
WHen I play fearless with power dvd and Nero player, all the movie is played, when I play it on the set top's, it skips forward and back, and misses parts of the flick. I tries any/clone @ 4x...same outcome. I have done the movie only, I will try movie and menus...maybe there is something encoded in the menu(s) i need for the settop's...pulling out what's left of my hair.

I'm going to pick up some better media as well and try that...

DVD-ROM drives/DVD burners will usually play back copies with out any problems observed, they're just better at doing it, so it's a bit harder to rule out any one thing just because the copy plays ok.

Try, if you can, playing the disk in a friends or family members set-top player that's a newer style and able to recognize all media formats. If the disk plays well without any problems, then it's your set top player/s that is/are causing the problem. There maybe an incompatbility issue between the two for some reason.

If the same results are observed on the other players, then I would have to blame the media. I backed up this movie as I stated above (movie only, no extras) using Sony DVD+Rs made in Japan @4X speed and it plays perfectly on my Sony set-top player.

Cheers.

Last post for me on this...read a couple other sites...returned orginal, got a new one. Made my back-up with my third rate media using shrink only at 16X...worked flawlessly...woohoo...it's not my media...its not burning too fast...it was the original. I was positive that it could not be my media, equipment(cough), or burn rate.

Thanks to all for sharing the knowledge.

It's all gits and shiggles, and that's what it's all about...
