I've been backing up my collection of DVD's using : DVD Decryptor, DVD2One and burning with Nero (5.5.10.35)
I thought everything was going great, tried each disc in my standalone player through the tv and had all the surroundsound etc perfect. Watched a movie completely for the first time and after a while it starts to pause/skip/freeze. Tried every other film and they are all the same. Also tried the discs (Discrite DVD-R 4X)in a friends standalone --- the same effect. Thought it might be the decoding program so I tried DVD Shrink 2.3 and again burned with Nero, the same thing happened.
Anyone out there who can help?

Same effect in 2 different stand alones and 2 different ways of backing up? Sounds like a media problem to me.

Check the compatability of the stand alones here: http://www.dvdrhelp.com/dvdplayers.php but I think the problem is more likely to be media.

Thanks very much, on for a bit of support here (and hopefully help) only to get kicked in in nuts. Cheers.

What discs would you suggest?

Exactly the same thing happened to me.
I got rid of the problem by buying Verbatim discs.

JimShea,
Take a look at http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/25085
you will see lots of comments on good media for various burners. You will also find lots of jokes.

Just reading through some other threads, could the problem be caused by the burn speed?
I have burned all these at 4X and would try burning at a lower speed if I had any discs left. just a thought?

Its really painful, but if you do have a disc left try burning at 1x. Its very possible that the discs can't handle that writing rate.

I had a very similar problem with a new pioneer 105 i recently bought...my older 105 produced perfect backups but the the ones done by the new one kept skipping after about an hour of the movie. solved the problem by flashing the firmware (be very careful!!!)with rpc1 firmware v1.33 by >NIL and friends ..now both drives are sweet!
ps i use crap x4 media by Princo and they still work without error in my fussy standalone

the plot thickens!
I am using a Pioneer DVR-105 also, I have already flashed the firmware, but I may as well try it again.

not yet, as I've run out of discs I've followed Oriphus' advice and just ordered some Ritek discs. They will take 2-3 days to arrive so i'll let you know what happens. I'll hold off flashing the firmware just now until I try a movie on the Ritek discs just to see if it was the crappy media (which I was conned into buying when I purchased the DVD drive).

Yeah, you have to be careful with the media you buy as it can be the cause of your success or failure.

just to check things, I tried the movies in the computer DVD playing through Power DVD -- no problem what so ever. This is starting to confuse a bit. I do understand that the quality of my standalone may not be as good as the DVD drive in my computer but what a difference.

A disc playing on your computer is no comparison to it not playing on your stand alone. A computer can read DVD, AVI, mpg, mp3, wma, and dozens of other formats. The DVD drive is also set up to read raw data, whereas the stand alone was deigned to only play DVD video.

I know, but my standalone has played everything I have thrown at it -- VCD, SVCD copy DVD's, MP3 discs etc. Im still a bit dubious that it could be the media I used. It's going to be a bit of a pain if it turns out to be the standalone --- anyone ever experienced problems with certain media in standalones ? do some discs play ok and others don't ?
The reason that I am dubous whether it's the media or not is that I've subsequently found 2 movies which played ok all the way through. It's all a bit strange.

I know, just trying to cover all options -- I'm still waiting on delivery of the Ritek discs but I think I'll buy some tomorrow and try them out.

I am grateful for the assistance so far.

Wait for the Riteks before buying. If you are happy with the riteks, stick with them and never worry aboutt esting other media. Ill test as much as i can at http://www.chrismccann.co.uk so you can have a look there from time to time.

I have heard some people having problems with media in different stand alones. They typically also can't play anything other than stamped discs. I have never had a problem with Ritek in various stand alones. Only a RCA really cheap DVD player at $80 had problems, but it seems to only play stamped (comercial discs). It couldn't play CD that weren't stamped.

My most sincere thanks to all of you who passed on your knowledge and experience in helping me solve the problem of the '25 Wasted Discs'. Being new to the game it is soul destroying to find that something does not work when your sure it should. Thanks again to the 'genuine' people who helped.
Tosca ---> get it right up ye. If you've nothing good to say then say nothing.

Thanx.

BTW, the Ritek discs work a treat at 4X.

Glad you got it sorted. My advice, as always, is to use Ritek Grade A whenever possible.
