I'm trying to backup off of a backed up copy (if that makes sense). the media of the intial backup is tdk +r which my dvdfab, shrink, and Nero cannot seem to read. i keep getting a "failed to read" error message. is there someway to get around the error. i believe it's the TDK media giving me the issue

with TDK media i'm not surprised. However let's go thru the motions of troubleshooting this anyway.

use Nero's cd-dvd speed program to do a CRC scan ie to check the disc for corruption and report back...

- it's in the scandisc tab, here's an example - http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_jump.cfm/433975/2657916

Hey seadale
All green is good - means the scan didn't pick up the any bad spots.

The graph showing the spikes is in a different tab - quality scan - which will scan the disc and report a quality score along w/ PI Failures & PI Errors.
Not all drives are supported by Nero in this option.

thanks binkie, i too tried the quality scan & i'm not getting the spike scans others are getting. just a score of 100, with no graph. i wonder if i am running an old version or something. i find it hard to believe my costco bought tdk discs have a better score than verbatim. am i right when i say you can;t test a blank disk, there must be something on it? Merry x-mas

Yes for those 2 scans you would need to have something burned on the disc.

100 quality score is a little too good to be true. I don't put too much stock in the quality scores - all about playback and re ripping.

What version are you running? Here's one you can use - can run separately from the one you have - 4.7.0.0

Merry Xmas :)

version 4.05....downloaded .07 & still got a score of 100. I still don't understand why i'm not getting the vertical spike graph shown in other examples? when i do the quality test it takes about 10 sec. does that sound right to you?

Merry Christmas all..

@seadale - for more info re what the graphs mean, see here - http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/193298

however that's good about no red squares on the CRC scan, it would appear the data is intact on the disc after all..

..it would be good if the original poster could do the same CRC test too..
i'm glad this thread popped up, i wanted to link another one to the CRC info here and was being a bit lazy :P

10 secs is too fast - usually takes a few minutes. Probably why no graph w/ the spikes are shown.
I'm thinking maybe the dvd drive isn't fully supported by this option (?)
What's the make & model?

The crc scan should have taken a few minutes too.

The reason i'm so interested in performing this test correctly is i had no idea the difference in media until i started studying the Nero speed. i usually buy my media in bulk from costco, & after reading this i am embarresed to say i am using the worst possible, according to our members. the cmc. What i dont understand is i've never had a problem using these discs. My back-ups turn out great, & to tell the truth, i don't see the difference between my TDK (cmc) & my lightscribe verbatim discs. Thats why its important to me to perform these tests correctly. Somethings not right, when i'm getting a quality score of 100 using junk media. tnx & Merry x-mas!!

You're right a 100 quality score isn't correct.

Now the HP can find who actually makes them - looking like LG or possibly a LiteOn. LiteOn supports this in Nero but LG's do not.

Usuallyif Nero doesn't support this drive on the quality scan you get a pop saying something like not supported. So I'm kinda unsure what's happening on yours.

CMC may burn now just have to watch them later down the road. Verbatim and Taiyo Yuden stand the test of time (well so far at least :))
Been there down that with CMC - usually burned then months later had problems. Either playback or unable to rerip them - too many CRC errors.

hi binkie, so your saying my junk discs will break down after a period of time just sitting around? i finnaly found a disc where i didn't get a perfect score of 100, it was 99.7, lol,.. i don't get any pop-ups about incombatibility as you described, so i think Nero has excepted my drive. I am still confused why i am not getting the spike graph showed by others...oh well. Think after i go through my 100 pack of tdk's, i'll start looking for deals on (MIJ) discs. Tnx for your help once again.

As always not a problem :)

Check them in a few months - do the scan disc or try and rerip them.
If the scan is only lasting a few secs and no graphs I'm thinking the drive is not fully supported (?)

Best Buy usually runs sales on Verbatim every few weeks - 50 for $12.99. I pick those up there.

Now for the Taiyo Yuden I use supermediastore mainly or rima.
Usually run specials w/ free shipping. Like on Xmas had 200 TY 8x hub printable inkjet w/ 200 paper sleeves for $59.99 - no tax and no shipping fees.
