TOSHIBA SD-R6112 DVD burnner drive - HELP

Hi,
Merry Chrismas folks.
I do need help.
I'm holding back my Christmas present for
my nethew, due to a problem on the TODSHIA
SD-R6112 DVD burnner drive that I installed
onto a IBM Thinkpad laptop.
I have a few problem that I need help before
I can give my nethew the laptop to watch movie.
# 1. I installed the TOSHIBA SD-R6112 DVD burnner drive,
but without a driver application. Which Windows XP
Professional only have this
C:\WINDOWS\System32DRIVERS\cdrom.sys
I try to have Windows to find other drivers for
TOSHIBA SD-R6112, but it says Windows cannot find
drivers for this model.
When I brought the TOSHIBA SD-R6112 DVD burnner drive
on ebay, it doesn't include a CD rom for the burnner drive.
# 2. I checked on the DVD Region of TODSHIBA SD-R6112
DVD burnner drive, it shows that it set for Region 2.
I went to the Device manager on WinXP Professional and
I try to change it to United States as a new Region,
Region 1. I clicked OK for Windows to change.
But WinXP Professional won't do it. Instead it brings up this.
error messsage.
"Unable to update Region setting. Please make sure the drive contains
a Region 1 media and you have administration privilege."
# 3. I downloaded a small MSDOS Batch file that would change it
to region free. It's a firmware for SD-R6112 that should
change the region into region free.
# 4. Regardless the above problems, the DVD burnner drive is
still working for playing DVD movies by using PowerDVD 5,
NOT WinDVD 5.
And it can burn CD/DVD which has NOT effects on any regular
DVD players, or regular CD players.
I Gues I'm so lucky that I'm able to play DVDs as long the
DVD burnner drive works with PowerDVD 5 player software.
But NOT for all DVD software, because of Regions setting
problem.
Which I'm concern about the applications for this DVD
burnner drive.
So can any of you help me with 3 problems I have?
What to download and to know what they're for.
I hope that I expalin all the above, and I hope any of you
could help with answers, clearly and understand.

Hey Eugene,
might be able to help with some..i have same burner in a toshiba laptop
#1 mine says it just a generic cdrom go to toshiba site there is some downloads on there
#2 check if you have any region changes left (it might be locked on region 2) if so i dont think theres anything that can be done. try going in SAFE mode and do the changes..i use AnyDVD and the changes can be done there
#4 when you put a movie in a popup box should come up asking which player you want to use. if WinDVD 5 is not listed just cancel and open WinDVD 5. or got to explorer, right click on dvd drive got to properties go to autoplay and check "prompt me each time to chose action"

Hi Stingner,
Glad you sent me the response.
Good infos, but one of them like go to SAFE MODE, is just
what my brother told me to do. But with the IBM Thinkpad 600E,
how do I go to the SAFE MODE??? Is it on one of the F buttons?
Like F1, F2, and so on. There are some blue simbles on some of
the F keys. And I don't know what they means or which one would
take you to SAFE MODE. I try some of those with blue simbles,
and it shows simbles on the black screen that I'm not famiular with.
Some has a NO sign or NO simble with red circle.
I forgot to mention in my posting, that my friend gave me WinXP
Professional from Europe. Maybe that's why I can't change the region.
Now do you might have the answer to this?
The lable of WinXP Professional on it's CD is "WINXPVOL_EN"
Do you recognize this lable when loading a WinXP on a CD drive?
I have "AnyDVD" but it's a trial version ONLY.
I think at one time with AnyDVD I try changing the Region
and that worked, but AnyDVD is only a 21 days trial.
What file should I find on TOSHIBA's website?
I downloaded the driver firmware that allows to read and
writes DVDs, but NOT for fixing the Region setting.
I also downloaded a firmware for making the DVD burnner
drive to be Region free. I restart the laptop, and go to
DVD drive's property, and still the same, Region 2.
So, that firmware I downloaded for Region free didn't
seem to help. I think it's WinXP Professional from Europe.
But most texts are in ENGLISH, no doubts about that.
As for WinDVD 5 Windows XP (from Europe) shows that there's
an enco8ntered error on WinDVD 5 because of it's not design
for Region 2, I figured. But PowerDVD 5 takes all regions,
which I'm surprised by that.
I hope that I explains it all, clearly and understand for you.

iam not sure which button you push to get to safe mode, but if you start the laptop and before it finishes loading hold down the on/off button til it turns off then restart it ( this confuses it and it should come up with a few options about restarting it. just pick safe mode (this is NOT the correct way to do it but it works for me)
The blue symbols are extra function keys... there should be a botton that has Fn on it...if you hold that key down and press on of the F keys it does what ever the symbols are (they are extra keys just for laptops)
On the Toshiba site find the downloads page then pick one of the note books etc and try the drivers for the dvd...not sure if this will work.
The xp pro from europe i dont know anything about, but it shouldnt make any difference to windvd5.this problem sounds more like a software problem, you may need to reload it.download limewire and do a search for AnyDVD , it should give you a crack that goes with it (there are no guarantees with this either as you could get a virus)
you didnt say if you had any changes left to change the region, if there are no changes left...it is locked on that region

Hi Stingr,
To turn on the IBM Thinkpad 600E, there's a slide button on the
left side of the laptop. Not a round push in button, just the
rectangle slide button that you push forwardd on the side.
So, I'm still having trouble understanding you on how to get to
SAFE MODE by meaning that with the on/off button which is a slide
button on the left side by the F keys.
Can you help me with a better way of understanding on how to get
to SAFE MODE with the right timing to make it happen with the
on/off button???
About changing the region on the TOSHIBA SD-R6112 DVD burnner
driver, when I select "United States" to become a New Region,
"Region 1", I click "OK" and it asked me "Are you sure that
you want to change Region 1?" I click "YES", then an error
message pops up that says:
"Unable to update Region setting, please make sure the Drive
contains a Region 1 media and you have adminstrated privilage."
Do you know and understand what this error message mean?
I don't get it. It locked me out no matter how many time
I try, even the first time.
Hope this helps with answers that you might have.

ok try this...start the computer, when you see the welcome screen come up..slide the button forward and hold (like your going to turn it on)till it shuts down, then restart and a screen with multiply choice should come up choose safe mode.
when you go to change the region put an original region disk in the drive(not a copy) and then change the settings

that was an original region 1 disk.
try this for safe mode...when starting the computer before windows starts press F8 key

Hi Stingr,
I starts up the Laptop, pressed F8 before Windows' Welcome,
and then I see "Thinkpad" words in the background, with a
bright blue square saying "ERROR 00301" in dark blue letter,
with a NO sign over a drawing hand. Is this normal??
Then below of a square messages it shows the option,
"TEST" or "RE-START".
Would the TEST option brings up multiply choices??
I'm now on this stage awaiting for your reply.
I'm looking at what F8 give me, "ERROR 00301"
TEST or RE-START.
I'll leave it until I get your response.
Hope you can help while I'm at this stage.

i dont know anything about a thinkpad computer...when you close down is there a drop down box under the restart option? if so there should be an option for restart in safe mode.
other than this iam out of ideas..sorry

Hey Stingr,
Great NEWS!!
But I don't know how I did it.
First, the IBM Thinkpad Laptop doesn't have "SAFE MODE".
I looked it up on it's BIOS set-up.
Second, I boots up the Laptop to the desktop, and
instead of SAFE MODE, I did what you told me to do,
is to insert a ORGINAL DVD movie that is Region 1.
Then I went to try changing the Region setting to Region 1.
Gues what?? It worked!!!!
It worked to change the region setting if I have the
original DVD movie disc that is Region 1.
No wonder why it doesn't work without a original DVD insert.
Then I re-boot the laptop, took out the original DVD disc,
and then while the DVD drive is empty, I re-check the Region
setting. Gues what??? It's remain Region 1 !! That's great!!

But I have a question for you since I succeed changed the
regions. How long will this stays Region 1??
I'm ready to pack it up to give it to my nethew for as a
extra Christmas gift. Once he'll gets it, I hope that the
drive remains Region 1. I know that my 14 years old nethew
isn't going to check the region setting from time to time.
Another question for you for me to know.
What's this Region free means?
I installed a DVD burnner drive on a DELL laptop, and I
check the region setting, it's set to Region 0.
Is Region 0 good?? I seen to satified with that.
Okay, I hope you like the great news, without needing
SAFE MODE. I hope you have answers for other questions
I asked.

Thats great news...it should stay at region 1 for ever as long as no pther region dvd is put in it. region free means that you can put any dvd from anywhere in the world (any region 1 thru 6) in it and it will play. most dvd players on computers are set for 5 or 6 region changes then it will lock on the last one and theres nothing that can be done to change it i dont know what region 0 is

I thought that Region 0 stands for Region free?
Correct me if I'm wrong. My thought Region 0 setting
measn you can insert any DVDs from Region 1 to 6.
Correct me if I'm wrong on that one.
I gues I don't know how to know or to recognize the
region setting for Region free.
