ok so my friend was talken to me about his new sonic game that he got. for the 360. when he put in the disc it said that the 360 needed to be updated before you can play the game. so my question is, what is that update. what does it do. and if one were to change the firmware on the samsung drive, could yhou still play backups when you use that update?

Don't worry, lots of games get updates. As for now they won't do harm: usually they are fixes to online parts etc. You can always choose "No" to the question "there's an update for this game available, would you like to update now?"
