Hi all, desperately needs some advice here.

The other day I a particular PS2 game would NOT read. It was a retail version (non backup) in very good condition, it used to play at one time. Even went and rented the SAME game (just in case mine was bad) - and neither played.

(btw the game name is Strike Force Bowling if that helps)

Noticed that the disc back is of a blue tint color (dye based?).

Most all of the OTHER games I own have a silver back and they play just fine.

So should I conclude my ps2 laser is going bad?

I have also noticed some of my backups were not playing either.
Could this be due to the color dye based discs too?
Just a quess. Any logic to that?

A new ps2 sells for like $129 now and i wasnt sure if I should invest in a whole new unit or just clean the laser, or replace it?

Any tips/help appreciated. Thanks

CJ

Could be the laser.. i had the same problem a few years ago with my Gran Turismo 3 platinum and my fat ps2
What solved the problem for me was i opened the ps2 and reset the laser using the white dial.. theres a tut on here on how to do it, otherwise google it.

its seems the forum questions that go unanswered are usually those where a solution is either "unknown" or just plain "obvious". The obvious solution here is getting the laser aligned - or it seems.

That wasn't the case here. I'm glad to say a solution was found to a somewhat unique and not obvious problem.

When you get a new flip top style case mod, it replaces the existing orginal ps2 top. There is a small white plastic piece in the middle of the lid, which is a the piece that fits over the disc, and spins.

In my case, it appears the white piece was sticking in the top of the lid, caused the disc to not spin fast enough.

I REMOVED the white piece and REPLACED it with the ORGINAL PS2 piece (it just pops out). That made for a better, more secure fit of the lid to cd, and made the discs spin up and READ!!! what a relief.

I hope this helps someone else who might have the same problem.
I never would have thought of it.

Now if i could just figure out what to do with the brand new in box SLIM PS2 that the UPS man delivered TODAY!! arghh!!

I'm not sure about the USB HD's mate, maybe you should check around this site for tips. I think it does work though but only on some models.
