What kind of movies?
What drive/s are they jumping on? Stand alone player/s,PC?

Could be dozens of possible culprits and not much info that was provided:

Programs that are transfering AVI to dvd format type of files
Media quality-crap media
Burn speed-too fast
Dirty laser lens
Burn programs
Fragmented HD
Heat build up
Crappy burner
Dirty laser lens-once narrowed down to 1 player.
Too much compression
Paper/sticker labels

Make sure the DVD-RW drive that burned them, plays them back ok using your pc. The quality should look near original. After that, the stand alone players factor in,so it makes a difference what drive is showing those issues to help narrow it down..

What are you backing up?

What's the brand name, format, and rated speed of your blank media? MID code would be very helpful.

How fast did you burn them?

What's the brand name, model#,and firmware version of your burner?

What programs are you using: Ripper, compressor, burn engine, etc

Test those backups on other drives: Pc's,ps2's,x-box's,stand alone players, etc.

I had the same thing happen after I burn the CARS movie! I looked fine on my PC but in my DVD player on my TV, it has 'stop/start' real quick and often! I have a HP Lightscribe dvd840 burner and using 'dvd shrink/decrypter'. It burns at 16x when copying to dvd disc from my HD. I'm a newbie at this, but I'm patience enough to figure it out with some help from you all! Thanks

Definitely drop that burn speed to 8x.

Your pc plays it ok,so that eliminates a lot of possibilities.

I'd look at your media.

Are you using HP media?

Thanks, I drop the drive speed to 8x and it played 'just fine'! I did notice that it doesn't 'start playing once I have inserted it into my DVD player thou! I have to press the 'title' button to get it to activate the disc, or it will sit with a 'black screen on the TV'. What would cause this dvd to 'not startup by itself like a regular DVD movie does'?

What did you use to rip your movie, sounds like not all the protection was removed....blank cells still remain. You could try ripping the movie again and then run it through VobBlanker.

DVD Decrypter by itself is outdated for some of the newer releases. It still works with many and some it works, but not to perfection. Try using DVD Decrypter with RipIt4Me, http://www.ripit4me.org . Use the installer which also adds FixVTS. Other than that, download the AnyDVD trial from http://www.slysoft.com . There's a discription of how it works at the site. Short description is it's a driver decrypter that works in the background to make DVD files appear unprotected (unless you're using the AnyDVD ripper). Give those a try and see if you get the same problem.

Here is some more info on RipIt4Me and guide

http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/360110

I think it does the best job on ripping and with FixVTS cleaning a file that there is.

OK Thanks. I did uninstall the DVD Decrypter and I install DVDFab decrypter, so I'll see how all of this works! Thanks again!

I use Windows Media Player on my PC. The DVD player on my TV is a cheapo one, but after burning a new disc at 8x, it play fine!

OK, You're not slapping sticker labels on them. Sticker labels would definitely show that issue.

I haven't tried +16x verb lightscribe. The +8x is very good.
Same with the +8x Dl. I'm still on some remaining +2.4x verb Dl.

Those should be some high quality discs.

Are you backing up entire disc or main movie only?

Main movie is what I usually do,unless it's a DVD-5 that has no compression.

Playback Issues with the start of backups:

Columbia pictures does some weird stuff, which has something to do with their trademark of lady liberty at the beginning of the movie. I always set my start frame-via DVD Shrink- after that lady liberty trademark. It also gives me a hair less compression. I also use the frame stop feature to get rid of majority of the ending credits.

I just got a friend of mine set up with RipIt4Me. He knows little about doing backups, so he chooses Movie+Menus and lets the software do it for him with the One-Click choice. (That's using DVD Decrypter, DVD Shrink, and FixVTS with the RI4M for those not familiar.) He's been doing Columbia, Sony, and Disney releases without problems and those have been the more difficult ones lately. He's also got AnyDVD loaded and if those don't work, we'll give the DVDFab Decrypter a shot. If RI4M doesn't work, hopefully one of the other decrypters will work. The key is keeping everything up to date. RI4M and AnyDVD check automatically for updates when allowed by the user. It's been so long since I used it, I forget if DVDFab Decrypter does the auto update or not.

I'm sure you're aware of what I was saying. I was mainly tossing it out there for the beginners. RipIt4Me has turned out to be a good program for beginners and takes out a lot of the learning curve. I hope it's kept updated. So far the support has been good, especially since it's freeware.
