I have a cable box to dvd - the tv is connected to the dvd
I have a dvd recorder (liteon 500)

Why can I not watch a different station and record another?

Thanks for your tips.
(when i try to have the DVD scan through available channels it shows up snowy except for channel 3 )
so I can record no problem but i cannot change the channel and watch something else using the dvd channel switcher

Hi wptgirl,
I too have a similar set up, I have an eastlink digital cable box, a dvd recorder, and t.v.
I'm hoping someone can answer this, as i am intersted as well.
I can do the same as you, i can record the channel i'm watching, but can't record one channel while watching another.
From what i've read, the way around this is to put in an a/b switch, i haven't tried this yet, although it should work, problem is, by putting in an a/b switch you by-pass the digital cable box, which means your recording an analog signal not digital.
The whole problem here is the 'digital cable box' being incompatable with dvd recorders, i beleive part of the problem is due to the fact that the dvd recororder operates on channel 4 like the vcr's used to, and the digital cable box runs on either channel 2 or 3 depending on your area.

If you had Two TV sets.
Can you view two different TV programs at the same time

You need to state this, Because if you can't [Thats It]

State. ALL inputs available at the cable box, and the In and Out connections on the DVD, and TV

As an example
I have Satellite service and can only watch OR record what the satellite receiver is tuned to. [But I have Two]
The satellite receiver has RF and composite outputs, a DVD does also.
The TV has an RF and two video inputs

I had a cable service that did not require tuning to a specific station and would allow watching and recording different ones.

Some connections would require a DVD orTV to be set to CH 3 or 4
Others would not.

Yes of course I can view two different channels but I don't have the box connected to the other tvs its just the basic cable.

The cable box puts out a signal on channel 3 only. The channels are selected on the cable box instead of the TV or DVD recorder. That's why you can't watch one and record another. The best way around this would be to put a splitter after the cable box, and run separate lines to the recorder and TV. You would use the A/V inputs on the TV (assuming it has them) to watch a DVD.

ok, so if i understand you correctly, the cable goes to the cable box first, then where it says cable out to tv..this is where i split the cable with a splitter? then run one line to the t.v.. and the other cable to the dvd recorder's 'cable in' connection.
Does this sound right?

I apologise for my previous post. Ignore what I said. I must have had a major brain fart! I was probably thinking of too many things at once. That won't work.

Short of using a second cable box, you might be able to do it (with limitations) IF your TV has audio/video inputs and if you have analog cable. See if your TV will pick up the cable signal without going through the cable box (if the box is just to descramble premium channels). If so, you would need to put the splitter BEFORE the cable box. Connect the output from the box to the DVD recorder (so you can record all channels) and the other line to the TV. Connect the A/V output from the recorder to the A/V input on the TV. The limitation would be that you could only watch the scrambled channels through the A/V inputs (from the recorder) so you couldn't watch them while recording something else.

Of course, this all depends on your equipment and your cable system. I hope it works for you.
