If you bought it new chances are it's a Hitachi 0078fk or a Samsung MS28. What's the manufacture date? It's possible it can be older drive it was made before august.

Open the drawer and you'll know if it's a Hitachi or Samsung.

ok have hitachi drive but spent almost an hr trying to open the damn thing. my fingers are practically bleeding. does any one have a systematic way of opening this pain in the ass?

you can cut a plastic case up from either a dvd spindle or like wise and craft a seven pin stencil to fit the holes ....pop the front open first , then do the top five on the rear and finish with the bottom two.

otherwise buy a opening kit :)

got the 78fk it looks like...

all i need is to get this drive recognized in windows so i can flash it.

ps2menace, can i just do the two wire trick to get it into mode b? from wut i hear, it's the easiest and most preferred methods for flashing hitachi drives.

Now I face a moral dilema. Should I say "yes" and let you totally brick your 0078 drive?

No, the only way to get the hitachi 0078 flashed with software involves using the slax2 boot cd to get the hitachi in modeB. Use a VIA 6421A/L PCI SATA card. There's a simple tutorial here which tells you everything you need.

you take the drive and you have to open it up and then stutter **** on the chipset and your mom will come and flash the drive for you.
