I've seen a video where a guy takes apart a dvd drive and uses WXripper to backup a game. He puts in a regular movie, stops the drive and swaps it for a game. He then used WXripper to find a magic number. Then he ripped the game, the game was in ISO format. Does this method require patching with SS merger?

Take the ss.bin file and patch it with SSMerger... like you previously said yourself.

It makes life alot easier if you plan to backup your own 360 games. Simple one click stealth-backups if that drive is flashed with kreon .81 firmware
