In short, what is the difference between windows 32 and 64 bit? Can I run my current 32 bit apps in Windows 64 bit? Is their any advantages/disadvantages?

I think you have to have 64 Bit hardware for the corresponding version (i.e. a 64 bit processor) and vice versa.

But I could be wrong...

You need a 64bit CPU in order to run a 64bit OS, or 64bit apps.

Yes Pea, 32bit apps will run within the 64bit OS. There will be none to barely recognizable advantages.

i agree...just switched back to 32 xp from 64,absolutely no benefit i could perceive, and come to find java dosent work with 64 bit we browsers (tried ie and Firefox) plus had troubles with my scanner printer drivers...didnt seem worth it to me, but im only speaking about xp x64 but from what i hear vista x64 is even worse.

Thanks, thats what I needed to hear. Currently I have an Athlon 64 and 32 bit Windows. Now I just recently finished building my rig and when I bought Windows XP it had a coupon to get windows vista in the base and premium versions for a discounted rate. So they had the base and premium versions in 32 and 64 bit and I thought I would see what the difference was between the two of them first. I dont plan on upgrading to Vista but if you can get it Vista now for cheap might as well get it right? :) So thanks, I'll be sticking to 32bit then 'cause it sounds like 64 bit has a lot more cons than pros.
