Modded PS2 Not Playing Games

I have a V4 PS2 and a Magic 3.1 modchip. When I try to play a game, original or burnt, the disc just spins and nothing happens usually. If a game does start it usually has no sound and everything is very choppy.
I'm trying the guide thats already on here, but I'm posting this just in case.

Have you been using one of the excellent burning guides on this site?

If not then that might be the problem?

i used several of the burning steps given to me by a member and wen i placed the burnt game in the ps2 im seein and hearin the game but its jumpin continuously avoided me 4m playing it wat cud b the prob

Its not just burnt games that don't work, its the original ones too. I'm thinking that it may be the laser.
