I've always heard it's good to burn DVD's not at your burners max speed. The problem is, my new Sony notebook has a max DL write speed of 2.4x. Will I be fine writing at 2.4x (I know it's slow, but I can live with it), or should I get a nice external DVD burner?
I'm mostly concerned with the longevity of my discs, how long they'll last. These are Verbatim D/L discs by the way.
Hi, I dont think it is worth it getting a new burner just because of the DL speed, also why dont you check for firmware upgrades for your drive to see if you can improve the writing speed.
Dont worry about longevity they are just as good as a single layer DVD-R. so lets say 25-50 years in the best conditions.

For example, my desktop burner and media support 8x D/L burning, so I burn at 4x. This sony laptop only supports 2.4x burning, so I'll be burning at the max, 2.4x. Do you guys think this will be a problem or should I buy an external drive? If the quality of burn will be the same, then speed doesn't really matter for me.
Well In this case burning at your burner max speed, at such low data rates quality is not affected, getting a external burner and burning at 2.4x and using your laptop and burning at 2.4x with the same media, will give very similar (if not equal results depending on the drive brand). So dont worry you are good, as I see it there is no need to buy an external drive.
