According to the DVD Shrink guides, and other threads, encoding should only take an hour or so. When I try, the rate is very low (less than 100kb/s), and it says it'll take around 40hours to encode.

Does it take longer because it has to be decrypted, or is there something wrong with my computer?

You should rip to your hard drive first. You're putting a lot of strain on your DVD player.

99% of all problems are between the computer and the chair.

Thanks for the suggestion, but that didn't work either. I think it might be my computer. Any other ideas?

Are you backing up entire disc or reauthoring for Main Movie only?

With a lot of original dvds being dvd-9's and you're using blank single layer Dvd-5's,compression will slow you down. More compression, the slower you go.

More compression, higher analyzing and encoding times. If using Backup in low priority mode and the Adaptive Error Compensation quality enhancements like Max smoothness,Max sharpness, that will slow you down even more.

Other things factor in as well:

bitrate-frames per second
Hardware-processor speed,hd speed,ram,etc
Programs being used, some will rip faster than others.
Multi-tasking:Running other programs while using DVD Shrink.Shrink will hog 95+% of your processor. Anything kicking on,will slow it down,as well as add glitches to your backup.

Spyware,virus's,malware,registry errors.

I even slowed down on a small pc when gf added yahoo Messenger. Used to take 3 mins to do the initial analysis, now takes over 10 mins. It will now take me 24 + hrs to do a small dvd backup using DVD Shrink. Only 20 mins to do a small dvd using DVD Decrypter in Mode ISo read and write.

With DVD Shrink, Compression is the major process time hog. Try reauthoring, for main movie only, tick only AC Ch 5.1 English only, untick all the other soundstreams, sub pictures, set start/stop frame to cut out beginning/ending credits. Try to keep the compression tab of DVD Shrink at 100-meaning there is no compression. When that number drops, compression is rising. When shrink tells you 80,you got 20% compression.

When no compression, the AEC quality enhancements will be grayed out. With compression, ticking the Max smooth enhancement,Max sharp, etc will add time. You'll notice this when you click backup and shrink will analyze slowly and then encodes slowly. By slowly analyzing,I'm not talking about the very quick analysis that you get when you first hit open disc. It's a totally different type of analyzing. When unticking those AEC boxes,it goes straight to encoding, bypassing the slow analyzing stage.

I strongly suggest using those AEC quality enhancements for huge movies like Harry potter,Lord of the rings, etc. These movies will be around 3 hrs each for main movie only, therefore 40+% compression. Those AEC enhancements improves the quality of your backups during playback.

By reauthoring, you'll up those backup process times.

Thanks for your help. I actually got it to work by unchecking the Run Backup in Low Priority Mode box. But now, I'm getting a problem trying to Re-Author. I'm adding only the movie, but no matter how low i set the compression ratio to, it always ends up being 5.3 GB
Is there some other option i have to change?

When you re-author,after dragging main movie over: Click on the tab that says Comression setting tab. Set it to automatic, and you should get a high number-which 100 is my goal meaning no compression. Lower that number, higher the compression.

I always leave that set on automatic, unless I backup entire disc and set the unncecessary files folder as a still image-like friday night lights-movies that had the boy in green shorts jumping around as part of their special encryption. You can also set other things as still image like menus.

Tick AC3 5.1-ch English-it's usually the largest size sound stream, unless english is not your native tongue, LOL.
Untick AC2 and any other sound streams
Untick everything else which may be ticked-director's commentary, sub picture, etc.

Use the frame start, frame stop to get rid of a little bit more compression.

What's the name of that movie?

Take any of Lord Of the Rings trilogy. Main movie only, everything else unticked and still 45+ % compression. Those AEC enhancements helped out big time for that series.Otherwise my picture of my Tele would have had a square block look and fuzzy.

Sometimes on my analyzing and encoding, the time may start out being an hour, but then those kbs per second starts going up- starts slow then speeds up.

Another option:Going with Dual layer media will speed you up,since no compression is needed. I rip with DVD Decrypter and burn with ImgBurn. It's easy on your pc,2 program process, and a great looking backup.

Try this:

Check to make sure your dma's are turned on and not saying pio mode-that will really slow you down-if your main harddrive is in pio mode:

Go to device manager/ IDE ATA/Atapi controllers. Open the tree.
Look for the primary and secondary controller/s-you may have 1 or 2 each.
Double click primary/click advanced setting tab on top. That'll show you device 0 and device 1- make sure they say DMA,UDMA,or either of those 2 with Available.

Do the same to the other primary and both secondary controllers. If any of those say pio mode, then click the drivers tab, uninstall, and re-boot. If more than 1 controller saying pio mode,uninstall,reboot,1 controller at a time.

Burn errors are usually the culprit. When windows detects 5-6 burn errors in a row,it'll revert the transfer mode to pio mode, for safety purposes. The drives need to be uninstalled and rebooted. After that, windows should put them back to DMA or UDMA mode.

Once in a blue moon, windows may change those modes back and forth, without you even realizing it. You're in dma mode 1 min and pio mode the next, then back to dma. An uninstall driver, rebooting will help , if you get really slow process times like you described and you have adequate pc specs .
