Really depends on how much you are prepared to spend on modding your PS2. I hear modchip is the "better" option, but this can be more expensive than other methods such as the "fliptop lid" or "slide tool" (note these require Swap Magic).

i would like to spend no more than 100, well my first option was the dms4 ezi pro solderless modchip, but every place online that sells them are on preorder.Im wondering if there is anyway i can get hd loader to work, without having swap magic or a modchip on my ps2?

As I've gone down the Magic Keys and Swap Magic route (for my slimline ps2) I'm not an expert on modchips at all. I think you should be able to find a decent in stock modchip for less than 100. Google it and also hopefully modchip users here on afterdawn should be able to recommend you one. Just sit back and wait :)

I have actually bought Swap Magic 3.8. It is still on its way and should be here Monday. I had to get Swap Magic 3.8, the slim ps2 swap kit, and a USB HDD. I had to get the ps2 swap kit so I could play burnt copies and I got a USB HDD because you can convert your games onto the HDD and play all of them from it with Swap Magic.
I didn't go the mod chip route because all I want to do is play games and not hack them.

Well since you already have a 120GB Hard drive to go into your PS2 all you need is Swapmagic and a PS2 Network Adaptor to hook your HD to the PS2
HDLOADER can then be d/l'd from the net and all you need to do is create a MC exploit with a PSX game and you'll be good to go.. No Wear and Tear on the laser and if a game doesn't work with HDloader is should with your Swapmagic discs

If you already have a network adaptor then all you need is swapmagic and a Slide card or Swapmagic and a fliptop..
I'd suggest the fliptop
I got mine from clearxbox.com
$24 for Swapmagic 3.6 and Slidecard combo
OR
$32 for Swapmagic 3.6 and Fliptop combo

Swap Magic 3.6 has worked for me with around 99% success rate.. some games need rebuilt/patched however.
