WMP error playing saved .mpg file

When I try to play a .mpg file from Internet, it launches my WMP 10 and plays it fine. But when I save the .mpg file on my hard disk and try to play it in WMP10, it gives me the following error:

C00D11CD: Unknown error
Windows Media Player encountered an unknown error. This can occur when another program or operating system component encounters a problem but does not communicate the nature of the problem to Windows Media Player.

One more strange thing is, if I remove the .mpg extension of the file and try to play it, WMP gives me a warning about unknown file format and then plays it fine.

Could someone help please?
