Hi. I have a fat PS2 (v7), which I got chipped, and I have been using it for about 5 years now. A few days back, I bought a pile of games from Malaysia (and please don't start on piracy and all). 5 of them were problematic.

They would start, the PS2 logo would come up but when the actual game started its loading, the PS2 hanged. On giving it to a supposed specialist, I was told the lens was weak and very few games would run. I took it home, only to find that no game was working at all now. I took it to the guy again, who said that the lens is now totally busted.

Question Number 1: Is that possible?

Second thing is if I get hold of a computer DVD drive made by Sony, can I replace just the laser lens part with the part from the DVD Drive? I can imagine it would be problematic, but I just want to know if it is possible or not.

Thanks in advance to anyone who can answer my problems.

Yeah, it is quite possible that your laser has burnt out due to long use. On replacing it, I think you would have to contact Sony and get a replacement lens from them, or pick up a cheap PS2 from Ebay etc and use the lens from that.

Dont contact Sony cause they will do nothing for you since you voided their contract for installing a modchip. (tore the sticker on the back of the ps2) Some sites sell replacement parts for the ps2 from 5 to 15 dollars depending on the version of the ps2... but because its such an old version, i doubt youd be able to find it, sorry. Maybe inserting the laser from your drive might work, but if it doesnt, tough luck

Thanks for the information guys, but I was considering replacing the lens with a PC DVD Drive option, and I just wanted to know if it was possible or not before I actually try it. Could you find out if it is or not?

Thanx Again,

buy a laser made for a PS2
I am pretty sure that taking one out of a PC DVD drive
is not going to work.

If you look on some of the sites that sell modchips you can find replacement lasers for PS2s. Taking one out of a DVD-ROM or something probably won't work. I won't say it's impossible but would definitely require a ton of technical knowledge... probably not worth it. The standard thing to do here is to buy a replacement laser for your PS2. You can have it installed or if you're handy can install it yourself.

Note that if your v7 used the KHS-400C laser that they are no longer being made. The "new" ones they sell are actually refurbs. I hear they work well but I don't know. I've also heard that some company in China is selling a laser dubbed the 400W which is compatible with the 400C line.

Thanks for the information dude.

Now, since I know its really not worth the effort, I'll wait for 6 months and buy myself a PS3.

Thanks again
