well it depends on the model PS2
If you have a fat one you need to have a network adapter that comes with a PS2. Then you can either buy a crossover cable and run it into the router. Or buy a wireless gaming adapter if your router is wireless and you want a wireless connection.
A slimline is the same except you do not need te network adapter, the ethernet port is built in.
and yes, you can use a USB external hard drive. But you need to get a disc called USB Extreme in order to run it unless of course your PS2 is modded with a DMS4 Pro modchip.
and on a side note there is a program out there that you put on the
PC called Xlink Kai which has a few PS2 compatible games if you want to check it out. And also an online gaming program that is pretty new called Leaf Networks that you can set up gaming online with any of your friends who get it.

I have the fat version with the 8 screws(Version must be <=8 && >=4).
At the back there's a slot for the network adapter.

Cool , i thought i had to get something special or some kind of extension.
So thats all i need : a network adaptor , one external hdd(i already have) , and a utp cable(i already have one..).

to know the exact version look at the numbers on your PS2, there is a sticker with a number that starts something like SCPH.....

Something that i didnt make clear.
My hdd is maxtor 120gb (ATA) with a custom external hdd case(with "custom" i mean that i bought it & installed it).
The usb cable supports v2.0 protocol.
It will work , right?
