Interesting device, more questions sorry:

1. Do I need anything to come with the HDD other than the HDD itself? (like a cable or something, I'm looking at an ebay auction of just the Maxtor Quickview HDD)

2. Does it matter what kind of HDD I get from Maxtor? (Diamondmax, Quickview, etc.)

3. How does the USB Enclosure work? (do you put the HDD inside of it and go from there?)

4. How can I check to see if my USB ports (they are old), are USB 2.0 Connection compatible?

Thanks to everyone for enlightening me!

1) Won't need any cables all that should come with the drive itself

2) drive has to be 3.5" IDE Drive

3) Yes you put the Drive inside the enclosure plug it into the USB port and go from there.. Make sure your HDD Enclosure supports your drive size .. Mine supports up to 400gb

4) I have no idea how you check and see if you usb ports are 2.0 or not but if you plug a USB 2.0 device into a 1.0 port then it will just run at a slower speed

1. What program should I use when reading and writing isos?

2. What computer drive do you need to read official PS2 Games and put the isos on your computer?

Thanks to everyone for enlightening me!

If you're doing a game that doesn't require any special burning techniques, use DVD Decryptor. As for the DVD drive, it just has to read and write DVDs. Dual-layer would be useful, because there are a couple dual-layer games. You could probably get one around $30-$40 for a good price. I use a Sony DVD+-RW 16x Read/Write Drive, and it always works for me.

My biggest problem now is that I can get 500GB HDDs cheaper than 400GB HDDs.

1. Is Serial-ATA the same as ATA or is that SATA?

2. Which one is the best: ATA-100 or ATA-133 or Serial-ATA?

3. Will a Serial-ATA HDD work with the PS2?

Thanks to everyone for enlightening me!

Serial ATA is SATA and you can not use those.
It has to be an IDE type 3.5"

Listen everyone this guy is a total n00b
u don't have to go telling him bout USB enclosure and.. and.. and..
listen man :

the simplest way is to take out the HDD from the ps2
place it in your computer
run winhiip
install the games wheather they r downloads or your originals
take the HDD out of your PC
connect it back to the ps2
boot up hdloader or hdadvance
choose the game you want to play
PLAy it!

see u don't need a usb enc. or anything

no , there is no way a faulty iso could hurt your ps2,network adapter,HDD,PC

As for your unanswered question, ATA-133 is better (but not too greatly) than ATA-100. If you have HDLoader, then you load in UDMA mode (some acronym for faster loading using ATA-133 interface), and then your games will load milliseconds faster than with ATA-100. So if you can't find a ATA-133 for cheap, then don't bother, because there isn't much of a difference.

@ Retro_rc
It doesn't matter if he is a "n00b" or not, he's here to ask questions, and we're here to answer them. And he also said earlier that he doesn't know how to put a hard drive in his computer. Besides, do you really think anybody would want to open up their computer every time they want to install a game on the computer?

Do they make USB enclosures that can handle 500GB HDDs?

I just let a good 500GB go by me on ebay because I didn't think of this question earlier. Dam it!

Some of the enclosures say it can convert any IDE HDD, so does that mean any size also?

Do you guys know of any USB Enclosures that just suck and aren't worth buying?

Thanks to everyone for enlightening me!

Do I need a cable with the ATA HDD, the auction I am currently looking at just has the HDD in an antistatic bag, hopefully that is all I need.

I don't know too much about external HD enclosures, and I never even knew there was a limit, but from what I've seen, I haven't seen any enclosures with size restrictions, so you should be okay. As for what you need to buy, you don't need a cable, as the network adapter and hard drive enclosure do all the connecting for you. I paid $40 for my 160GB hard drive a year ago, and it was all that came in the package (in an anti-static bag), and I've used it with both the network adapter and enclosure flawlessly. Just make sure you connect firmly.

No, I lost the auction for the Mad Dog hard drive enclosure yesterday. Anyone have any specific good USB Enclosure recommendations?

Also, I just found out that my mod chip is not a DUO 2, but a Matrix Infinity v1.38.

Does this change my situation any?

Thanks to everyone for enlightening me!

Are there any sites where they will do custom old big fat PS2 skins for you if you send them an image or something?

I've been looking for some anime PS2 skins and I'm not turning up good results.

Thanks to everyone for enlightening me!

Hello All,

I have The PS2 Slimline v14 SCPH-75001. I am getting the DMS4 Pro SE Mod Chip kit from mod-chip.com which I need to install.

What I would love to do is also install a External USB Hard drive so I don't need to burn so much CD's/DVD's. I have read the posts for ATA hard drives.

Can you please tell me how I can install an External USB hard drive to my PS2 and does the size matter for the USB versions?

From what I understand with the chip I am getting I will not need any extra software or drivers to install the hard drive. Is this correct?

Thanks so much for your time,
Bobby

The external hard drive is a very bad choice. The compatability rates compared to regular backups is very low, and in addition, the speed of the games is about the same (if not lower) than that of a cd. So you're just wasting money. If you want to mod your slimline with a hard drive, do this:

http://www.mod-chip.com/en/hd_connect.php

It's compatible with the DMS4, too.

why get a such a huge hdd? i dont see the point in getting one more than aroung 750GB. A 2TB one would cost around £2000. thats prob nearly as much as the games youll put on it! and if ur downloading them it will take a while to download 2TB!

Thanks a bunch for all your help. mod-chip.com/... said that there hard drive enclosure would not work with my version of the PS2.

I went to the link you posted and they say it only supports up to v13. It's a bummer but I got the v14 which is not supported.

I got an E-mail message from mod-chip.com/... I asked them about the new EZI solderless chip that just came in for the PS2 Slim but they have not tested it.

So it looks like the best option is just to burn CD's/DVD's. I just was concerned about my lens life and saving shelf space with lot's of CD's.

Do you think this is my best option?. Below is the message from mod-chip.com/...

Thanks again for all your help,
Bobby

We got the Ezi for slim PS2 too but we want to test it first.
It comes with a full replacement case because the EZI doesn't fit in the original case.

HDCombo doesn't work on v14 PS2, sorry.

If you know how to solder your should get the soldered one because it is always better to solder in a modchip.

Ostermann

Soldered is always better. Sorry for the HD connector thingy, I forgot you wrote you had a v14.

But if you burn at good speeds on good media, then you shouldn't be too worried about the laser wearing out. I've use Swap Magic and backups for a year on my v7, and compared to my friend's v7 (which he hasn't used in over a year by himself), the load speed is maybe one second slower. So if you make backups, make it on good media (like Taiyo Yudens, but not the "Value Line", go with "Premium Line"), and go half of the max burn speed (ex. if max burn speed is 8x, burn at 4x), but in general, 2.4x and 4x are condsidered the best burning speeds.

Thank you so much. I will do that. I think my dvd burner goes to 2x burn speed. I still might go to eBay and see what they have.

The crazy thing is the ones I've seen are around $100.00. I might sell mine and get the older version and then re-mod.

Thanks again for all your help and time...

Thanks Again,
Bobby

OKAY GUYS!

So I have my PS2 now with the DMS4 Pro S.E. chip in it and I have a 400GB Maxtor HDD ready, what should I do now?

I think I should put the HDD into the PS2 so it is a formatted PS2 HDD. Then put the HDD into my comp, use winhiip to write the games, then put it back into my PS2 and be happy right?

Also, is there a way to compress the PS2 ISO's like we do with PSP and make them CSOs? Is there a penalty for doing so?

Thanks to everyone for enlightening me!

Yep thats about right. No they cant be compressed at all, PS2 wouldnt be powerful enough to uncompress on-the-fly. With some games they have either dummy files or just a heap of nothing on them to make them easier for the PS2 to read from, stick the disc in your PC and go to My Computer and see what it says the disc size is, then open the disc and select all the files and go to properties (right click on one of them when all selected). If the 2 sizes are very different then look up on rebuilding games. Also look for any files like dummy.dat etc they can normally be removed as well.
