Does the HDD have to be set up as master when being formatted in the PS2? (I have a jumper, so I can change the config if I need to)

How do I hook the PS2 HDD up to my comp after I format it in my PS2? (master or slave, does the setting matter?)
I was told to use CS (Cable Select)and then use Winhiip, is this true?

I hope this works, it is taking 4ever for me to torrent PS2 games.

EDIT
I hooked up the Maxtor 400GB HDD as CS (Cable Select) and put it into my PS2. I'm running on Toxic OS 4.1 and it asks me if I want to do extended or regular formatting.

I want to be able to play regular and backup PSX/PS2 games and want to run PS2 games off of the HDD, so which format should I do:

Extended or Regular?

Thanks to everyone for enlightening me!

So I finally formatted my 400GB Maxtor PS2 HDD as extended.

I am writing games to it now.

What does it mean if there is no boot record for a game?

EDIT
Is it possible to overheat the HDD?

I wrote 18 games to it and tweaked the seetings. Then I tried to write one more, it started writing then said "problem writing to hard drive".

So I restarted Winhiip and selected the drive again, there was no (PS2) label on the HDD when I selected it.

When it tried to read the HDD, it said "SCAN DRIVE ERROR: Problem reading hard drive" and quit.

So I was worried it had somehow corrupted so I put it back into my PS2 and it works fine.

Maybe it is just because the HDD is hot?

Should I try programs other than Winhiip or should I get a fresh version of Winhiip?

Thanks to everyone for enlightening me!

if you connect the ps2 hdd dirctly to the computer, put the jumper as a slave.

also, you cannot run psx games on the hdd. hdloader/hdadvanced will only run ps2 games.

i have no overheating problems with my maxtor 300gb. i've had it on for over 24 hours, and it's still running like new.

I took out my comps DVD drive (secondary connection, master) and replaced it with my PS2 HDD on cable select.

It wrote 18 games no problem and crapped out on me on the last one. My IDE cable and the HDD were both hot.

So you are telling me to hook it back up, but change the jumper to slave?

Is it okay to hook it back up to the PS2 as slave?

Thanks to everyone for enlightening me!

the hdd is suppose to be a slave when connected to the ide cable. any second hdd that's connected is suppose to be slave.

Will it also work just to leave it on cable select?

It seemed to be working fine for me until Winhiip couldn't read it.

Thanks to everyone for enlightening me!

it's best to use master on the psp and slave on the computer. it works all the time. cable select is if you don't know what to use.

Everyone is telling me its a jumper problem.

I have always had my PS2 HDD on Cable Select and it works fine in my PS2 and Computer (until the SCAN DRIVE ERROR).

I unhooked my DVD drive (secondary master position on IDE cable) and replaced it with my PS2 HDD (on cable select). I wrote 18 or so games before Winhiip stopped recognizing my HDD.

Solution (from what I have been told):
I need to unplug my CDRW drive (secondary slave position on IDE cable), change my PS2 jumper to slave, put my PS2 HDD in there, disable all of my firewall, anti-virus, and background programs, and see how it goes.

Or

Is it acceptable to pull out the DVD drive, change my PS2 jumper to master, put my PS2 HDD in there, disable it all, and see how it goes?

Needless to say, if I do this and it still isn't working, I will post again in this topic (not sure how long this will take, I'm going to get about 5 or more PS2 games so it is worth my effort to do this).

If Winhiip refuses to work, what other programs can I use?

or

What steps can I take to correct the problem (I don't understand any of the repair/scan functions)?

EDIT
Might it be a problem my Winhiip log states at the end (it was marked PS2 before):

SELECTED Drive 2 : 372.61Gb (51681 cyl, 240 trk, 63 sec) [REDUCE FRAGMENTS]
SCAN DRIVE ERROR There is a problem with reading the hard drive.
OPTIONS [Reduce Fragments : ON]
PROGRAM MODE [HDLOADER]
OPTIONS [Reduce Fragments : ON]
PROGRAM MODE [HDLOADER]

I am using Toxic OS v0.41, maybe it is set to the wrong program?

I am not scared to reformat the drive and write all of the games over again as they are still here. I would prefer most to have the drive formatted in my PS2 by Toxic OS again though.

Thanks to everyone for enlightening me!

Yup something is wrong! God this really sucks!

I changed the PS2 HDD jumper to master. Unhooked my CDRW and DVD, and plugged the PS2 HDD into secondary master position.

I loaded up winhiip. Everything seemed fine. I went to write a game, it wrote for like 40 seconds before it gave me an error.

Now it is back to saying it can't read the PS2 HDD. I restarted the computer and now it refuses to even see that the HDD is there.

So I plugged it back into the PS2 and it is fine. So I am quite confident now whatever happens in the comp won't affect what happens in the PS2.

I hooked it back into the computer the same way and it recognizes it as PS2. I have tried to scan/repair the drive option on it 20+ times, it always starts and gets about halfway done before it gives me an error that it can't read the drive.

I can select the drive and it can read it properly, but it seems if I try to do anything I am bound to get a drive read error.

WHAT SHOULD I DO?!

EDIT
Somehow I managed to write 2 games to it, but it went back to not being read as a PS2 Drive afterwards.

Maybe I should buy a new IDE cable?

Is it safe to reformat my HDD with Winhiip for use with the latest version of Toxic OS?

Thanks to everyone for enlightening me!

you don't need to go through all the unhooking to get the ps2 hdd working. i've done it with my cd/cdrw/main hd in place. just have the jumper set as slave. if you're going to get a new ide cable, get a rounded set. it has less chance of breaking.

you can use an usb hdd enclosure and leave the hdd as master. it will still show up in winhiip. i've used it on my laptop.

Have you ever had drive read errors?

There is no room in my comp to hook anything else up so I have to pull something out and I was told I should have the jumper on the PS2 HDD set to where the position is on the IDE cable, which for me was secondary master.

I don't know if it will make a difference if I hook it up as a secondary slave.

Thanks to everyone for enlightening me!

depending on your primary hd, if it's a regular ide drive, then there will be a second ide plug for the primary slave. if you have a sata hd, then use the ps2 hdd as secondary slave. leave your dvd/cdrw as secondary master (whichever drive was the secondary master at first)

i never had read errors. i formatted it with winhiip and switched to 48lba to support my 300gig maxtor.
