desoldering on a 1.0

what is the best / safest way to desolder the holes on a version 1.0 mobo? braid or sucker, or any other ideas. i have never desoldered anything is why i am asking. any simple instructions or information will be much appreciated.

just heat one side up and put the braid on the other and it melts into it?

thats what i did but you might get some heat damage, it wont be too bad
