If the current drive is reading every DVD available, except 2, that leaves me thinking it's more something to do with those 2 DVDs. First I'd run a scan for bad sectors. Once that's eliminated I'd start thinking copy protection. Your money though and DVD ROMs are cheap nowadays. I'm partial to Plextor, Sony, Samsung and HP. There's a bunch of other good ones, those are just drives I prefer in order of preference. Benq, LG, and LiteOn are other popular brands. So you're not lacking for plenty of choices.

Run down to Target or Wal Mart and pick up a DVD Laser Lens Cleaner disc. Get one that runs the color, brightness, and contrast check. If all those are good, then you should be good to go. That's a cheap easy test, not high tech. Then there's all kinds of more professional tests, i.e. Sisoft Sandra test segment for optical drives. You have to have their test disc along with the Sandra program to do the test. By the time you get through buying professional test software you probably could buy a decent burner. I've not seen any good freeware for testing drives. If anybody has one, I'm looking as well. I'd like to have something to suggest when people ask.

Like I said before, it's hard to believe a ROM is bad when it reads all DVDs but 2. Since the optical head is reading, whether playing or recording, does the DVD ROM play the movies with your player software? In other words, can you watch the movies on your PC? Since you have ROM and a burner, why not try burning the output to the hard drive (using the burner drive) and then burn the files from there. That's how people with only a burner drive do it. Or do you have 2 drives headed south?
