THANKS. i have followed your very simple instructions and everything seems 2b falling in2 place. but as i have disconnected the tv for 2 days will have 2 wait until her in doors goes 2bed to see if it works ok. must say ace instructions. since you appear 2b a bit of a geniuos let me test u yet again.
My ntl stb has got an rf splitter connected to the back of it which enables me to send a tv signal throughout the house. it appears the starview does not have this facility so i propose to split the main ntl feed with 1 lead to NTL stb as is and another lead to a tv dedicated to the starview stb, does this make sense to you?
Your humble servant

Just as a point of interest, today for the first time I flashed 2 Starview receivers for friends using the correct lead and no matter what I tried, I could not get the flash to fail, it succeeded every time.

Do you have USB - SERIAL & Null Modem cable? have you installed the CD that came with the USB adapter, have you checked which COM PORT it is using?

Hi jimsplace, ive done everything you have instructed and everything went great.
I re-connected re-scanned but channels still scrambled!!!
checked the version on the box and it still says 16 aug 2006 after updating!! Twice!!
What am i doin wrong?
In the GTRom Loader do i have to select it as channel data file? boot file only? or leave it as app file only?
If left as app file only why isnt it working??

Try putting the emu on as if you were first setting the box up.

**Here is the solution to the probelm with using a USB to COM cable**
You need the following :-
1. USB to COM cable with appropriate software to emulate a COM port
2. NULL MODEM CABLE, with female connections at both ends
3. All the relevant software as descibed in the first thread
You need to emulate a COM port on your PC or Laptop, that does not already have a COM port, this is done by installing the software that should have come with the cable.
Once you do this, all you have is a COM port, NOTHING else. You need the NULL MODEM CABLE to connect to the box.
Follow the instructions, as per the first thread on this page.
This has worked for me many times and I encountered the same problems that you guys seem to be having.
Cheers, Iain
P.S I assume the USB to COM is a male connection? If not gender changers would be needed, but you should not need these.

Can you explain further please. The people on this thread seem to be saying that they do have a com port but can't flash the box. So please explain what you mean by emulating a com port on a PC or laptop that does not have a com port.

He has explained it. The software emulates a COM PORT that is accessed with the USB-SERIAL adapter, all that is nneded now is to connect a NULL MODEM cable to it to allow you to flash your Starview.
