Ok guys....I'm somewhat of a newbie. Please bear with me. I?ve made 10 successful burns using Memorex DVD-R?s. I?m using DVDshink 3.2 and Nero 7 ultra. My problem is I just tried burning Serenity with Sony DVD-R?s and I?m getting a shut down with Nero. No matter what I try to burn to these Sony disc I keep getting a burn failed, But when I use a Memorex disc it works. Am I doing something wrong or is it the Sony discs? Help I spent $30/100 and already went through 6 discs!

did you buy those sony dvd-r's from bestbuy? however you have goten a bad pack of disc and maybe you can tell them back and exchange them for somemore or another brand. also what type of burner are you using?

My Sonys worked good, same with Memorex. Try using Verbatim.

I think you guys got the wrong idea here. first off Memorex is crappy media! don't use it.... those Sony disks are better quality and should do the job.....Some people had problems with Serenity:
http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/274615
or maybe your drive doesn't like the -R media! try +R media and booktype to DVD-ROMs if your drive allows it:

1. burning speeds: burn at 4x so there will be less writing errors (rule of thumb is to burn at half the rated speed of the disk--8X disk burn at 4x).
2. read manual for your stand alone player and use the disks that will play in your player. If your player is less than 2 yrs old then it should play the + or - R disks! I said SHOULD that's why you read the manual.
3. try booktyping your drive to DVd-ROM so it will make your +R disks more compatible to players. Read this:
http://k-probe.com/bitsetting-booktype-faq.php
4. make sure that there are no finger prints or scratches on your disk that make it hard for the player to read the disk!
5. use good quality media (rule of thumb....buy the ones that are Made in Japan.) Verbatim is a top notch disk and is the only exception to this rule....some Verbatims are made in Taiwan and they are top notch!
6. and don't burn too close to the outer edge of the disk ..... which will make the disk unreadable! but using good media you will be able to burn close to the edge better than lesser quality media. Just in case I only burn no closer than 4400MB, so if you can set your programs to that, all the better!

follow these little tips of the trade and you'll have better success! good luck.

also read this:
http://www.cdfreaks.com/reviews/Why-DVDRW-is-superior-to-DVD-RW/
why the +R media is better than the -R media

welcome to afterdawn! good luck.

Did any actual burning take place? Look at the bottom for the discoloration from the burn.

What speed rate were those Memorex discs?

What speed rate are the Sony? Probably 1x-16x.

Newer media,so you may need a firmware update to be able to handle them.

Use neroinfotool to locate:

Brand name/model # of your burner
The current firmware version
MID codes of your memorex and sony

Include a Nero burn log if you can,but leave out the serial # at the top of the log.

if you use Nero 6, let's have LAST section of your Nero log which lives in c:\program files\ahead\nero\nerohistory.log but DO NOT post your serial number which usually begins with '1A21' or similar.

if you use Nero 7, let's have LAST section of your Nero log which lives in C:\Program Files\Nero\Nero 7\Core\NeroHistory but DO NOT post your serial number which usually begins with '5C80' or similar.

either way you can differentiate sections via this section divider "====== *** Nero-Burning Rom, History File *** ======"

you will see it i hope:)

do the dvd play? whats the error log from?

Laptop? Who's the manufacturer?
They are more than likely the ones supporting this drive and would be the ones to get the firmware from.

I saw from the log (can you repost it?) Burn at Once was turned on.
Turn that off.

Yes a laptop IBM thinkpad. I just downloaded a bunch of updates from micosoft plus a driver update. I'm going to try all over tomorrow night after school. It's getting late and i'm tired of re-hooking up the laptop to the internet. I'll let you know tomorrow if this works.
Thanks for all the help.....binkie7 cute dog.

I am really curious about what is going on here too. I've been
burning backup disc successfully for a long time on all different
media. No problems (except for Saw III) until the last 3 discs I
burned. There were 6 or 7 very minor freezes on each of the 3
movies. (Sorry I didn't save the logs-will if it happens again.)
The only changes I have had is that I am using a new 100 pack of
Sony blanks and when I had my machine worked on the person that
did it put a new codec on my machine. The codec is AVI codec Pack+.
I am first going to try a different movie with both the Sony disc
and a different brand. If that doesn't answer the question I will
uninstall this codec and see what happens. Will let you know in
a day or two.

Hey Shardel
Have you tried playing these back in the pc? Player may be the culprit.
Blow some canned air in it or use a dvd lens cleaner to try and clean the lens.
Firmware up to date on the burner?

Nero also saves the last 10 (I think it is) burn logs - fails and successes.
Look here for them (text files):
Nero 6 - program files>ahead>nero>nerohistory
Nero 7 - program files>nero>nero 7>core>nerohistory

Just need the last one - and be sure to edit the serial # - begins w/ 1A, 1C or 5C.

You could be right about cleaning the player. I haven't done that
in a while. I've only had time so far to burn the 2 discs on different brands of media. Haven't had time to watch them yet, but
I saw something really interesting while I was burning them. The
Sony DVD+R 16 times disc read as only 2.4 and 4 times compatible.
The TDK 8 times disc read as 2, 4, and 8 times compatible. When I
burned the Sony disc the buffer was up and down all over the place.
On burning the TDK disc the buffer never once wavered. They were
both burned from the same ISO file. (Both discs were burned at 4X)
