Hi
I have just purchased a new wii and was going to install a wiikey. having just done a quick bit of research i now disciver that either it won't work on my wii or the installation is more difficult. If it doesn't work is there another chip avaliable? If it is a case of the latter, is there an installation guide of what needs to be done

it will work but you should have a professional install this for you. You need to sand away a part of a chip on the wii drive to get at the legs nintendo has hidden away in their supposed 'un moddable wii'

I have seen the pictures of what Nintendo did to hide the leads on the drive chip. It seems that the leads are still exposed on the bottom close to the board. Can we still solder on the exposed pads near the board and no need to grind down the drive chip to expose the chip?

obviously you have no idea what you are talking about since you have seen the pics, and yet you failed to see that soldering to the bottom of the leads will do nothing if you do not connect them back to the leads on the chip that needs filed away and exposed.
if everyone would just take the time to read the posts, follow the links, heck there's even pics. the info is right in front of you. it doesn't get any easier than that. yah it takes time, but you can't have everything handed to ya'.
not tryin to' make enemies but, come on the info is already posted
just a thought

What I meant was that the pictures that are posted show the drive chip pins still exposed on the board. There is something black covering the upper portion on the pins. Can we just solder onto the pins on the board?

does anybody know how the recovery mode works on the wii key?... would it work if say a wii got flashed by paper mario, then installed a wiikey, would we be able to re-flash it to the right firmware version? or does the wiikey have to be installed before the wrong firmware is flashed?

anybody got a walkthrough? screenshot? anything?... if I knew how this works, I might be a little less paranoid about playing off-region games... I'd sleep a whole lot better at night knowing I can recover even after having royally screwed my firmware.... any info on this recovery thing would be awesome.. thanks in advance guys!

I am not sure but i think you understood the 'recovery mode' wrong. IMHO it is for recovering the wiikey from a bad flash. So if you try to update your wiikey and the update fails it may somehow be possible to recover your wiikey. I dont think this has in any way to do with your wii firmware.
Just use WiiBrickBlocker on games with firmware updates from a different region and you should be fairly safe ;)

@jimmy: Already a week is over and no update in sight... I am getting ready to heckle you ;)

I asked this question on another thread of this forum.
I did not realize there was allready a thread about the modchip itself.

My questions are:
1) What is the best modchip to buy right now?
I heard a lot of good buzz about the Wiikey, but I also heard a rumor that they were no longer going to support it.
Is this true? Is so, is there a better Modchip to buy?

2) I have a brand new Wii and I know it is missing 3 leads from the chip on the board, I am prepared to dremal away the chip to install the mod, but I heard a rumor that there might be other mods done to the DVD board that would prvent the mod chip from working. Is this true? Has anyone had any luck modding the most current version of Wii??

i am not using any modchip because there arent any good wii games out there and i dont want to spend 130 bucks on a wiikey and the installation. it's not worth it. nintendo really has to make more good games like resident evil and zelda. i mean what's up with using wii points to buy nintendo 64 games and sNES games. who wants to play those old games, maybe some folks.

anyway that's being said. do u guys know how i can add more features to my wii menu. i see alot of empty slots on my wii menu. my current wii menu comprises of wii weather forcast, news, voting, and wii store.. is there any way i can add more stuff to my wii menu. thanks to the people that reply..

oh great! now I have to live in fear again! I thought it was like the PSP OE firmware... how sad.... I guess there's still no way to really protect from region brick.... oh well.... thanks for the reply Deathcrow ;)

i don't know why you guy still going for the wiikey? the wiikey is only good when it first came out with the upgrade feature. Now every modchip can do the same and better yes including the disable feature safe for online. The wiikey lacks the disable feature. Second it have problem with some gamecube audio problem, but all other chip worked fine. So the wiikey is now the worst modchip to get.

Yeah that also suprises me. My current place for modchips took the wiikey out of supplies.
I'm getting the latest Cyclowiz now, they said it was the best choice and they never let me down.

But as long as it works, that is still the most important/

Hey. Had a wiikey but couldn't get it to work. Spent about a day and half trying to solder it and get it to work. ordered a wiikit chip. spent another day soldering that. still no luck. went back to the wiikey for a couple of hours still couldn't get the damned thing to work. tried the update disk too. thought one final try with the wiikit and thought it wasn't going to work as i inserted an original game and that wouldn,t load.was just about to take it all out and send it off when i thought i,d just see if the update disk worked and hey presto i now have a fully functioning wii and this was a new version of the wii brought about 2 weeks ago. Most of the problems i had were because i hadn't inserted the update disk. Just to let you all know

good idea, as none of the tutorials i have read say you need to insert the update disk to activate the chip. It was only after a bit of searching that i stumbled across it being mentioned. Most people are saying its the media that the games are written to that is causing the problem. Maybe this isn't the case?

sorry jimmy, i usually don't go on afterdawn much. Well i think every modchip is fine from what i read, they all have disable feature. But i read good thing about wiinja deluxe for having good gamecube compatible, so i recommended that. It can do all the thing the wiikey can, even dvd updated as long as you got the wiinja deluxe and not the old model v2. And even with the wiikey newest update is nothing new, it only fix the gamecube audio problem that their should have been fixed months ago, other chips doesn't have that problem. But the updated still doesn't disable the chip so it still the worst modchip.

I ended up buying the cyclowiz V2.
It was only $34 and came with a free tring driver and a free switch.
I hope it's good!
Has any one had and bad experiences with this chip?
