I have been using DVD Shrink and DVD Decrypter to burn. This has been working great. For some reason, it has stopped working. It seems like everything is working just fine, until I try and play the burnt DVD in a DVD player. Nothing happens. I can play the movie from my hard drive. The movie is burning to the disc, but Something must have changed in my settings, I guess. I checked the DMA things and they are there. What can I do to find out what changed and how can I fix it. I don't have enough comp. skills to dig into my system. I am at the end of my wits.

If your using Shrink, go under Quality Settings and make sure the option to bookmark disk as DVD-ROM is checked. This may help make your disks compatible with your DVD player. Also, did you change media lately? Media type may also play a factor in this. Finally, try playing it in a different DVD player, if you have one. Hope any of this helps. Good Luck!

Are the Quality settings in Shrink or Decrypter? I don't see them. I looked in Shrink Preferences and Decrypter settings. If you can't tell, I am kinda green. I am using the same media I have been using.

To give you a few more suggestions:
Try playing the disc back in the pc your burned them in too - let's see if this may be more a dvd player thing.

The setting FFsp42 posted about is when you click backup in Shrink. In the burn settings tab you'll have a box to check 'burn type to dvd-rom'. If it's greyed out means the drive might not have booktyping capabilities or you're using a -R disc (only +R format can be booktyped).

What the make and model of the drive? May just need a firmware up date too.

What media are you using? Like Sony +R 16x. Many brands use different manufacturers so you never know who you will get. Can also be part of the problem - esp if the drives firmware hasn't been updated for it.

I see that my device says DVD-R and my media says DVD+R. Is this a problem? I am using the same equipment that I used in the past, when it worked.

Back again. I have noticed that when I put any of my burnt discs in my drive. The drive changes from DVD-RW Drive (E:) to CD Drive (E:). I sure hope somebody has an answer for me. Thanks

That's normal.

Have you changed the brand of discs you are using? By that I mean exactly the same, same country of origin and speed?

I am using the same container of media I started with. I tried to update my firmware, but everytime I try and run it, I get a message that says "Available target not found". I really appreciate the help, Thank you. Do you have any more advice for me.

Well seeing as they are from the same tub I don't think a firmware update will help. The 106D is a rather old 4X burner, it might just be done. Usually DVD burners can still burn CDs after they quit being able to burn DVDs.

OEM, bare bones drives are cheap, maybe it would be easier to move up. Another advantage is that you should no longer have problems with new media of any speed. At about $30 why not?

I would avoid the HP, Sony or Samsung drives and see no real reason to get the more expensive LightScribe units (media is also more expensive).

Thanks for the help. I bought a new dvd drive today and it seems to have fixed my problems. The unit came with Nero 7. When I tried it out today, I just used Shrink and Decrypter like I did before. It worked great. Do you recommend using Nero or would it be O.K. to keep using Decrypter. Shrink and Decrypter are so easy, if I can stick whith them I will.

Stick with them if they suit your needs. One of the advantages of them is their small, tight, non-conflicting code. I also like the Quality/AEC enhancements that Shrink has. Depending on the source material you have 4 choices that may improve/tailor the output more to your liking. Nero 7 can be a bit twitchy (I still use 6) and the version you received might not be the full version anyway. But then again you might want to play around with Nero as it is a very comprehensive program.
