If you are sure it is a USA phone, borrow a T-Mobile SIM and try it.
It could also be from Canada.
Most of these phones (USA)I have seen are from T-Mobile.
It'e best to try a T-Mobile SIM. How do you know it is locked?

I did try a t-mobile sim and it said restricted. With a stop Sign and undo.

OK. If it is from the US it might be Cingular.
Is there a chance it came from Canada?

As you say USA T-Mobile does not work then that is a Canada Fido mobile.

Error code is what I got what happens if i try to many codes will the phone be useless? is there a way that we can find out who the phone is locked to with out gussing?

STOP!!

Let's figure this out.
If you hard lock the phone, it will only work on the original network.
Since you do not know the original Network, you will not be able to use it unless ou have it unlocked with "The Box" hard ware solution.
Code Error means that that was not the right code.
The only way to find out the Network the phone is locked to is to try all the Network SIMs.
You said you tried Cingular and T-Mobile SIMs.
The only other Network I have come across with this phone is Fido.

Try this ONCE. it is for Fido.
Read the instructions carefully.
