This is a dumb question...

But the Mad Dog burner I bought has the lightscribe technology and in order for it to work properly the drive has to be horizontal. It came with a little stand.

I was just wondering if when using an external device for the actual burning if position matters at all.

Short answer is yes for a burner. Hard drives, not so much.
