@summitboy...well, did it work? Was everything installed correctly? S'up?

@Pac, ok so some of podukaville has rubbed off, but not much. It's more the other way around, we bring urbanity to this place!

@Blink, yup saw3 was the worst so far, it made my laptop eep and click and whir for a while. But I did this with Ripit so...It was no problem

OPEN SEASON - LOVED IT! And so did Ripit. It was a no brainer. Clone and Any wanted to hiccup a little with the dual format, but it may have been my settings. I only use any/clone when I am in a big hurry.

We usually play the drumset and turn up the amps when hunters roll down our way. We'll scare the elk out just to make sure they get past the public land and onto private! The hunters hate us so I so so SO identified with this movie.

That said...not all hunters are dishonorable and most that we respect in this area use the whole animal for hide food etc. That I can handle. But these people take very few animals and only when needed. I am SO down with that. Elk tastes good and along with deer it is the mainstay for many poor people in the hills.

So cats and kittens what comes out tomorrow? Anything cranky?

lol - then open season was the perfect movie for you kitty66 :)

The only cranky one that I know of right now is Zoom: Academy for Superheros. The same stuff as Saw3, Running w/ Scissors & Open Season.

Thanks blink! You know that was my kinda movie...so ZOOM a kids movie huh? It seems like all the good ones to decrypt are the icky horror movies I don't want. I am excited when a cranky one is one that I can buy and break. I just love doing that. Thanks again.

Yeah it's a kids action movie I guess you would say.
Has Tim Allen in it so may be cute.
Though the copy protection on it is old news now :)

It always is by the time I get to town to buy a movie! And with Ripit being such the ace I don't have any trouble anymore. I guess I shall just repeat the same info over and over and over again for people having issues.

But all the same, it is fun to get one that has issues on the boards and be able to back it up no problem!

Hey AnyDVD is up to beta now 6.1.2.something

Kitty
I love it. You switch from hokey poduka to urbane quite well. The elk still live a charmed existence in these parts. Wildlife management is trying to build the herds back up, so no hunting except in a very limited lottery situation. The bear population is doing a bit too well. I'd like to see some buffalo in the wild, but they need a lot of grazing land no longer available. Guess I'll just have to imagine those in the wild and view them in the parks and farms. One of the liquor stores I occasionly stop at to get gasoline has a small herd of buffalo just across the road, less than fifty yards away. Many days I've seen people lined up along the fence admiring the animals. First time I mentioned them to my friends they accused me of getting more than fuel. LOL

To stay on topic, I guess I'd better take some home movies and use Shrink to shrink em down. ;)

Kitty, you're starting to sound as bad as me. Both of us are looking for that difficult copy protection just so we can see if we can do the backup. ;)

HA, this is funny, my husband says I am more addicted to this kind of crack than any junkie he has ever seen. Too funny (believe me in the music biz, we've seen way TOO MANY JUNKIES! Yuck) anyhow, I hear we're worse...oh no! Apparently I spend money just to back something up, what me? Never...

So those home movies, can we super encrypt 'em so we can smash em up? Now that would be fun. I would love to be able to encrypt something so that it took Ripit4me with Shrink to unlock it. Glee, I have video stuff coming out soon for the band and would try it on that but it is against our credo to encrypt stuff. We get more people wanting to buy full albums after FREE DOWNLOADS...go figgure???? Why can't the RIAA figgure it the F out. K...end rant. Sorry, that get's me going.

Have a good one pac!

I try.

Your mention of the RIAA brings up thoughts of Big Brother. Take a bereaucracy like that and it's more self perpetuating than caring for the industry it's supposed to represent. At least that's the way I see it. Rant... Rant... ;)

Some of my friends used to have a band. I got to play roadie on the weekends. I probably had more fun doing that than anything else I've done. You're right, you see all types. There was enough beautiful women to make things interesting though. ;) Some of the private parties looked like an invitation for the fire dept. with all the "smoke".

Wish I'd taken videos so I could have used Shrink when if finally came along. ;)

First let me say that I am not as ?Geekie? as most of you guys are in that I just want to back up my movies in the simplest way possible. I do not particularly enjoy spending hours tweaking software. This is the first time I have had a problem with a movie using Shrink/AnyDVD.

So I thought I would try a different approach to add to my arsenal if it was not too much hassle. I have had the final versions of Decrypter and Shrink for some time. I followed the guide and I believe I followed all the steps as PacMan777 pointed out.

?Avoid ISO here, ?
PacMan, I?m not sure what you mean by this. I didn?t use One click mode partly because I was afraid if it required my input, I would not know what to do. When I used the Wizard, I did movie only partly because the Full DVD option was grayed out.

binkie7, I have never updated my firmware because I have heard horror stories of major problems when folks have done it wrong and I have no clue how to do it. Since every thing has always worked, I figured why fix it if it ain?t broken. Maybe I need to get brave. I do have two drives by the way and I did try both.

Did somebody say Vista, I didn?t know we were allowed to use bad language on this forum.

My wife and I sat down to watch Open Season and after about ten minutes, we were looking at each other thinking ?OK, better get the grand kids.? But after the movie began to progress, we really enjoyed it.

Thanks for all the responses. I will mess around with RipIt4Me now that I have it and see if I can make it work because I do not think this is going to be the last time Shrink/AnyDVD is going to have a problem. Those ex-virus creators that are now working for Sony are working overtime.

I went through and documented the steps from a simple setup to using Shrink to burn with Decrypter. I did it with the older version 1640 available at the time of Saw 3 release, so I used that title in the example because of the difficulty level. I've since done Open Season with the updated version. 1-Click uses less user input than the Wizard. Once you click the 1-Click feature there is 1 more click to be made for complete processing (if you've already got your settings prepared in the setup stage). You click Next and the entire "cleanup" happens without user input. Wizard on the other hand works you through each step individually. I think Wizard was created for those who like pushing buttons.

Here's the steps I used with Saw 3. As I mentioned it works the same for all. I suggest using a better burner than DVD Decrypter. The newer, faster DVDs need speed control for the burn:

-----------------------------------

Here is what works and a short guide to get the job done. Even the newest beginner should get this one. Now watch someone ask how to do it 2 or 3 posts from now. LOL

The Free way to do DVD backups (Including Saw III:Unrated)
or a RipIt4Me Quick Start Guide.

Round up your Software for the installation if you don't already have them installed.

DVD Shrink 3.2.0.15

DVD Decrypter 3.5.4.0

FixVTS Home page or FixVTS at AD

RipIt4Me Home page

With those 4 you can do a high quality backup.

Steps:
1) Install DVD Shrink and DVD Decrypter.
Note: Shrink and Decrypter need to be installed before RipIt4Me.
If already installed you're ahead of the game. LOL

2)Use the RipIt4Me installer. It installs RipIt4Me and a version of FixVTS. Let the program install to the default directory (unless there's a particular reason you can't), C:\Program Files\RipIt4Me .

3)Update FixVTS if necessary. The current version for update is 1.6.0.3. Open the FixVTS 1.6.0.3 and copy the FixVTS.exe into the RipIt4Me folder in Program Files to replace the version already there.

RipIt4Me is now installed and ready to operate. If the above steps were followed, the paths in RI4M should already be set. You can check the paths to DVD Shrink, DVD Decrypter, and FixVTS
(Open Logs/Settings - Preferences - Program Paths. See #2 in 2nd image below.)

When in the RipIt4Me Preferences window you can rest the cursor over a setting and a box will open explaining the function. (#1 in image above, cursor isn't visible over command setting, but explanation box is showing. Use this function as much as possible to learn commands for RipIt4Me) Also Reading the short official guide would be a good idea.

Leave the update notification on and keep the software updated for best results.

Hint (nothing to do with RI4M, but a good idea): If you had FixVTS installed before you will now have 2 instances, wherever you had it before and in the RipIt4Me folder. To keep from getting myself confused, I removed an old version of FixVTS I had previously installed. I left the version in RipIt4Me. If you choose to do the same delete the old version and remove any shortcut you had for it. Go to Start/All Programs/RipIt4Me and right click on the FixVTS shortcut and Copy and then Paste the shortcut to the Desktop. This allows you a desktop shortcut for FixVTS when you want to use it without RI4M. You can always access it in Start/All Programs/RipIt4Me, but I like the quicker access.

4)Make sure all on-the-fly decryption software is off.
If you make a mistake it gives a warning.

5)Put the DVD in the drive.

6)Open RipIt4Me and Select Wizard or 1-Click Mode.
I'd suggest 1-Click because it does everything the wizard does automatically.

7)When the Step 1 - Pick Drive, Target Folder and Rip Mode window opens be sure all boxes are checked under FixVTS settings. (Picture above)
If Process in place is left unchecked you will get a backup of your original files from before FixVTS processing. With a 7GB DVD it would take up 14GB on the hard drive. It's optional, some may want the backup files. Remember the backup is the original unprocessed and possibly noncompliant files.
Be sure the Rip settings output is set to what you want.

8)Click Next
Now you wait for RipIt4Me to rip and process the files. The files will be copied to the target Directory listed (or selected) in the Step 1 - Pick Drive, Target Folder and Rip Mode window.

9)The cleaned files will be opened in DVD Shrink automatically.
The quick analysis checks the files for compliance.

If the files open properly, you should have compliant files.

At this point RipIt4Me is complete, it's finished the job of cleaning the files and making them compliant. The files are now cleaned and can be used in almost any editing, transcoding or encoding program.

10) Since the files are open in DVD Shrink and we want a free backup we'll continue on. Remember from this point on it is purely Shrink and nothing more to do with RipIt4Me.
Select either Full Disc or Re-author

11)Click Backup to open the Backup window.

12)While in the Backup Window Check the Quality Settings if the compression is very high. This takes longer but the quality of the video output is better. (Image above)

13)Set the burner option in DVD Shrink for DVD Decrypter.

14)Put a recordable disc in the burner drive and let the drive get ready.

15)Once burner drive is ready click OK in the Backup Window. (Image Below)

Now you sit back and wait for the DVD backup.

@summitboy - Ripit is really not that hard to set up and I don't think you have to be a total geek to do it. Just follow the guide and use the one click method the wizard is a misnomer. The one click is easier. It will dump you right into shrink that way and you know how to work shrink. One click is best for beginners.

And geeez, color me ignorant. I did not know that ex-virus producers were working for sony now. No wonder it is such a poop festival lately. Do explore ripit. There are tons of people here that will help you with that product and like you said, it may be imperative with the virus-ers hard at work!

"Geekie" holds connotations of coke bottle glasses, white lab coats, and pencil protectors. Being into the bike lifestyle to some degree and not considering myself a "Geek" I'm less than fond of the label. I'm just an inquisitive type with moderate intelligence. You don't have to be a genius to play around with recording software. One of my favorites is RI4M. Once set up it requires almost no user input for the entire rip and cleanup processing of a factory DVD. 1-Click and you're done. How much more simple can it be without voice recognition where you only need to tell the PC what you want. Maybe someday...

Firmware update is not that bad - it's really hard to screw it up. Well unless you do it during a t storm & lose power.
Most drives firmware are foolproof in that the correct drive has to be present for the update to even be run.
Firmware is the instructions for your drive - one main thing it does it update the drive with the correct read & write strategies of media.

Takes maybe a minute. Just unzip the download, have no discs in the drive, no programs running and keep the power on. Run the .exe file - reboot and the firmware is updated. Not that bad really :)

Here's another one from this week releases besides Zoom that won't work w/ Shrink & AnyDVD right now - Marie Antoinette - same Sony stuff as Saw 3 and the rest - has 82 bad sectors.

edit: typo :)

it makes sense they have put rootkits on you before when ripping a audio cd. I'm not suprised if they are puting them on dvds.
I'm talking about the wierd cyclic data error I'm getting in the middle of burn which ruins disc. A format and reimage takes care of btw.

As usual, you guys have come through with great information. PacMan777 you really have given me confidence with all the great guides. I will sort it out and let you all know if I have further problems. Sorry if I offended you by using the generic Geek term. You?re right, it used to be derogatory but I was under the impression that had changed. Anyway, I was using it with the greatest of respect.

binkie7, that does sound like an easy procedure, I shall update my firmware soon. Again, thanks to all.

Glad I could help. BTW, I don't really think of "Geek" as being derogatory and I'm not really offended. They're sort of glorified in advertisements nowadays. But "Geek" is a sterotype. Those I try to avoid. They don't necessarily fit. Plus you don't need to be a "Geek" to do what we do. I have a friend who is almost computer illiterate and burns DVD backups with the best. I see what you were saying though and thanks for the compliment.

BTW, Binkie makes a good point with the firmware, just be careful there is no power outage likely.

Good luck.

I am having trouble updating my firmware. I downloaded the file, an .rar file, and when I click on it a message says windows cannot open it. I am directed to the web and am offered these two choices of programs to purchase to open it, RARLAB WinRAR or WinAce.

Is there any way to open the file without getting more software? This seems complicated to me.

You should be able to find a trial or freeware program to open a RAR file at CNET's http://www.download.com . If you're going to deal with downloads, many come in zip or rar compressed folders. Resign yourself to getting the software or be limited in the downloads you can handle. I've had WinRAR for the longest. It's a good program.

Thanks again PacMan777. I am not a huge downloader as you might guess but I have never ran across a program that did not open on its own. I downloaded a shareware version of WinRAR and will see how it goes.

Thanks for being there,
