Sony DRU710A not reading anything!!

hey guys,
I have a Sony DRU710A dvd/cd burner. I have had it about a year, year and a half.
Then today I went to burn a dvd and Nero claimed the burn failed. At this point I can still hear clicking and etc. inside the burner. THe eject button does not work, at this point, so i did a manual eject, and the drive was still making some noise. So i restarted and then the drive will not read anything, cd or dvd.
I went ahead and upgraded firmware to be safe, and it worked just fine. However, it still will not read anything, when I go to my computer it is just as if there is not a disc inside of it.
please help, if you have any suggestions, or if you think its screwed and i need a new drive.

Hey masprague
Not ejecting not a good sign - but I've had some crappy discs do the same on mine. They might also be to blame for the not reading bit too.
Post your last Nero log and we can take a peek.
Look here for them:
Nero 6 - program files>ahead>nero>nerohistory
Nero 7 - program files>nero>nero 7>core>nero history.
It's a text file - just need the last one.
Be sure to edit out the serial # 2 - begins w/ 1A, 1C or 5C.

sorry to hear that masprague
I had the same dvd writer in my computer and then it stopped working (it would have the green light on all the time when my computer was on) and would not eject the tray or anything. Then I bought a BenQ 1620.
My sony drive started working again but now it is setting on the shelf because it is not dependable.
Good luck with getting your drive working again.

Ok -1st thing let's edit out the serial # in the 2nd log - begins w/ 1A
So the drive fails burning both cd's & dvd'd (both logs are cd's)
For the dvd what media are you using like - Sony +R 16x?
CDR code: 00 97 26 66; OSJ entry from: CMC Magnetics Corporation
For the cd's - these aren't the best - can be hit or miss. For cd's try made in Japan Maxell or Fuji.
Burn process failed at 40x
Try taking the burn speed down to 32x or 24x.

Ok then it may just be time to replace it - not reading anything now, manual eject and making noises.
Drives are pretty cheap now.
You can also try it in another pc if you want to be sure.

Hi...
I ve been facing a problem after a year of using the DRU 701A.. all of a sudden all the DVDs i burn (mostly DATA) are unreadable.. though CD writing works perfectly it is when copying DVDs that I encounter this problem..
I thought it would/might be related to the firmware so i updated it to the latest (BYX5) and still encounter the same problem. Today i managed to copy a Video DVD via Nero Copy and it worked fine.. i tried about 5 DVDs to copy my data from the hard disk and it does copy.. till the very end without any errors.. but the resulting DVD is unreadable even in this very drive..
Could anyone please point out what I am doing wrong and hopefully give some suggestions? I am planning on switching my drive to a ASUS DVD-Writer in case i dont find a way..

there does not seem to be anything called nerohistory under the core directory bro.. would it be under a different file name? there is however a Nero text file consisting of config parameters n stuff..

Hmmm it's usually under the core folder. Check the Nero folder and see if it's there maybe.
By default Nero usually saves the last 10 (I think that's the #) burn logs.
Another option - try another burning program too. Here's a great free one - ImgBurn.
Use the build mode for non iso files like the data files you're trying to burn.
