Check the backside ot the box.
If you see 3 scart sockets its a dbox1.

You have to differ between dbox1 and dbox2.
For a dbox2 you need IFA, a crossover cable and if you want additionally a nullmodem cable for flashing.
Precondition for a dbox1 is a amon cam and a funcard with valid keys. If you don't have such things scanning makes not much sense.

You should just leave if on $KY Movies for a minuite to update the keys.

There's no market for a DBox1, you can try selling it on ebay.

No!! lol.

It's too much trouble & cost trying to programme a funcard & getting keys. I'd just get rid of it.

If you are able to switch on your brain its piss easy.
You can get the current valid keys from your dbox2.
Preconditon is a amon cam and a fun card with dbox1 files as I mentioned above.

You need a modul like this one
http://cgi.ebay.de/AllCam-Multicam-6in1-...VQQcmdZViewItem

and a funcard programmed with dbox1 files and valid keys and DVB2000 on the box.
If the keys are rolling you have to update the keys at the funcard.

If your mate paid too much for the dbox1 its maybe not worth the hassle to invest more money.
Average price for a dbox1 with amon cam should be around 30 quid.

Shouldn't have too much bother with a Starview as it should autoroll the keys, if not an update will be posted just as I posted last month.
