Difference between DVD game backup and DVDrip?

After slaving through the forums search engine, I found no mention of the difference between a DVD (game) backup and DVDrip. So now I ask you, What's the difference?
Sorry for the beginner level question, but we all have to start somewhere eh?

dvd is the normal rip, normal size; dvdrip is a dvd but is ripped to 700 megabytes to fit on a cd instead of dvd

unless it is a dual layer game ripped down to DVD5 avoid the DVD rip versions.
