Problem Burning DVDs with Phillips DVD8801

Hi Everyone,
I have just started using my Dell to burn DVDs. I have been successfully burning CDs for a while but usually burn my DVDs at work. Anyways, I used DVDshrink to backup a DVD and I wanted to burn it.
Unfortunalty the burn fails and log reports some problems. I am unalbe to figure out whit it is not working.
Some info:
Nero: 6.3.0.3
Philips DVD+-RW DVD8801 Burner
Windows XP
Media: Verbatim DVD+R DL 8.5GB (I'm not sure how to tell the speed?)
I have tried two different DVDs with no success. I have included the log from Nero. Should I be trying to upgrade Nero, install and new driver for my DVD burner.
Any suggestions on how to proceed or any additional information to capture in order to debug would be appreciated.

Thanks for the reply.
I wasn't using any program to remove encryption initially. I wasn't sure how to tell when I needed to do this. (I'm a newbie to DVD burning). I am aware of DVDFab for example but was able to do the first DVD I wanted to backup with just DVDshrink. I DVDshrink being successful means I did not need encryption removed (how do I tell when it has encryption to remove?)
Just using the DL disks because that's what I have on hand. What would you reccomend for general use? Single sided, certain brand or speed?
Thanks for letting me know about ImgBurn. I downloaded and trying the "Read" function to create an image-using the burner drive. Then I will try to burn. (It's still reading)
Becaue it was closer, I grabbed another DVD first and tried to "Read" it and create an image. I recieved a popup with the following almost immediatly. I tried it with both drives on my system. Does this mention of authentificaiton mean I need to use a program to remove encryption first for this DVD?

About all of the factory movie DVDs are encrypted and copy protected nowadays. Some more so than others. Shrink includes outdated decryption software as part of the program and can do some but not others. To be sure, use a decryption tool such as RipIt4Me. If I remember correctly Nero 6 didn't support dual layer burning till late in the series and then not well. If you're going to use Nero, I suggest Nero 7. For dual layer though, all you need to do is set up and use RipIt4Me to copy the decrypted and processed files to the hard drive and use ImgBurn. That way you don't need to invest in more software and what you get is as good as the retail offerings for what they do.

Thank you both for your replies.
That makes sense with the DL support becaue I tried but was not able to burn a data disk either with Nero.
So using the instructions for ImgBurn in those links, I was able to use to "Build" a "Dual Layer ISO" image with a little work. I use "Write" mode burned it and it works!
So, I'll look into upgrading my Nero (which should give me DL support right?) but for now I have the option to stick with ImgBurn for DL disks. Each time I'll just get in the habit of using RipIt4Me first-thank you for that info. I'll assume the popup message in my previous post was ImgBurn telling me that there was encryption on that DVD.
Since I'm still new to this. Could someone tell me (or point me somewhere to read) on what media I should be using to backup my DVDs? Brand, speed, Single layer? I'll save the $$ and not use my DLs each time. Will pick some up tomorrow.

Sony DVD +R, doesn't matter if they're made in Japan or Taiwan, both are good. Normally you'd find the latest on the shelves 16X. For video you only want to burn 4X to 8X. If your drive supports it, booktype to DVD ROM. ImgBurn has a speed control. Verbatim is usually a good option as well. With transcoding programs such as Shrink you shrink the output from RipItMe to fit a DVD5 (4.7). Shrink supports your Nero 6 to burn to DVD5 with no problems. If you replace the exe file in DVD Shrink (Program Files on C:) with the exe file from this download, it will also support ImgBurn instead of the older DVD Decrypter burner.

Finally, what did you mean by "If your drive supports it, booktype to DVD ROM." does this just mean the output of RipIt4Me (booktype) directly to DVD ROM.

I'm still trying to download image burn update. The site is slow overall but the download keeps timing out. I looked for it elsewhere on the web but no luck. I'll keep trying: (http://files.dvdr-digest.com/encode/DVD_Shrink_3_2_b_w_IB.zip)
I read up on Booktyping too as you suggested; I get it now.
I picked up some Sony DVD+R today so I'm ready to go!
From more reading I gather there is a DVD5 (single layer format)and a DVD9 format (DL). As you said before, with a program like Shrink, we are transcoding the double-layer DVD movie to a DVD5 format for Nero/ImgBurn to be able to write to DVD+R. That is the reason we need the Shrink program. (sound about right? Please correct me if wrong)
Still have a few questions...things I'm not straight on.
1. Assuming encryption has been removed (RipIt4Me), do I still always need to use "shrink" to transcode to DVD5. Or does ImgBurn or Nero have the ability to do this too? Or do certain decryptor programs also do this?
2. If answer to #1 is yes, is DVDshrink the prefered app to do this since it is older? So far I have been making ISOs with Shrink and burning them. We'll see how the update does with burning from Shrink to ImgBurn.
3. Any reason I wouldn't just use ImgBurn only from now on and not Nero?
4. When do I run into having to burn DVD9 format? In this post I've already done the excersise of getting a DVD5 on my DL media.

You should start browsing the glossary here at AD. DVD5 is the commercial 4.7GB disc. DVD DL or DVD9 are dual layer discs. For burning DL you have to have a DL capable burner. DVD9 holds 8.5GB. Factory DVDs can be DVD5 or DVD9 depending on what's needed to hold the content. Factory DVD ROM discs are pressed, not burned. If I overlooked something, just ask.

Depends on size. Anything less than 4.37GB will fit to a DVD5 withoug transcoding (shrinking). Nero has a program named Recode that transcodes and burns. ImgBurn only burns, so the content has to fit the media, DVD5 or DVD9.

DVD Shrink is a good freeware, possibly the best. For best quality you need an encoder. Read about Rebuilder.

Just for burning Shrink output it doesn't matter. However, there's more to the Nero suite than a simple burner.

DL is for doing content over 4.37 that you don't want compressed. Less than 4.37GBB and you're wasting money on DL media. The vast majority of my DVD backups are on DVD5.

Will there be a time when I Shrink and cannot fit the transcoded DVD-ROM content on DVD-5 format(media DVD+R)? If the job is done properly it should fit. Most people who have encoders use those when compression dips below 75%. With transcoders things start getting flaky in the 50%-60% range. You have to watch how much you try to compress. With experience you'll see the difference.
5. Are commercially pressed DVD-ROMs actually DVD9 format or does DVD9 just refer to the DL DVD R media? Both. You'll see people using DVD9, DL, and DVD DL interchangably. I've been reading for a little while now and can't seem to find this answer.
