In order to help we need more information. Are you trying to copy a
backup disc or a file (if so what kind of a file)? What programs are
you trying to use.
In the meantime if you are trying to copy your backup disc, I have
been successful reading it to an ISO file with Shrink and then
burning with Imgburn. Both are free programs. Otherwise you can
make a new backup by copying your original disc.

Why not just copy your original?

Have you tried writing a backup using an 8X disc instead? A lot of
people are having trouble with the Sony 16X. Is your firmware
updated? It may be that your machine doesn't support writing on a
16X disc. Also what speed are you writing at? People that have
been writing at 4X on 8X discs are finding that they need to
write at 8X on 16X discs.

When burning backups, every backup will have small errors. Too many errors or errors in the wrong spots, and a crc error usually pops up when trying to rip it.

You've got to make the first copy as best as possible-with few of those little erros-PIE/PIF.

On your first backup disc:

1) Keep the burn speed at around 4x-8x.

2) Quality media-very critical. Verbatim are great and sony are decent. Burn 8x with the verbs-MCC-004,4x with the sony- SonyD21.

3) No multi-tasking-shut down all unnecessary programs during the dvd backup process.

4) No paper/sticker labels.Major no-no.If you slap these on the disc, then they will be harder to re-rip.

5) Keep harddrive/s defragged.

6) Burner quality: Very critical. There's some crap drives out there and will really put a lot of errors on those backups-HP,LOL. Also keep the firmware up to date. Firmware controls writing strategy-the programming to tell the burner how to burn certain media.

7)Backup target size: Avoid burning the outer edge of your media.Keep target around 4360 mbs.Crappy media, keep it at 4300 mbs.

8) Keep compression to a minimum-main movie only, cut out anything undesired.

Try using nero's disc quality scanning program-if your drive is capable- and see how those little errors add up on the backups you are trying to re-rip.Take note of the score and unusual spiking.

Since you have Nero, use the Copy DVD option. Then if the write fails, at what stage?
