I've been using Nero Burn ROM for DVDr's and Express Vision 2 for VCD's and they've been fine as far as getting the job done although Nero does give me a few burn failures when set to 4X. Shrink for movies to DVDr and SmartRipper/TMPEnc for episodes to VCD. Anyway I'd have to shell out $69 USD to get the serial numbers but before I do that I thought I'd ask you all about alternatives, one being that I can upgrade my Sonic Record Now DX to MAX for $25USD. I probably looked at it as it came with the burner but almost immediately I came here and followed a guide that used Nero so I've just kept using Nero. I'm pretty flexible though and can't get around any prog.
In fact Nero seems to me to lack certain settings for vid and audio quality that I thought would be present. I don't actually know what those are but it's very much put-the-files-here-and-click. The sort of thing my mom would like. I come from an audio recording background and I like to dig into the esoteric stuff after I get the basics down and I don't want to end up with a DVD Burn For Dummies prog that leaves me wanting for more. If, however, by the time I'm ready to burn that's all there is to it then that's cool as I'll concentrate on the processes before burning.
Thanks!

Record Now DX is the upgrade from Max. With Veritas anyway! I think the Record Now Deluxe is a good program to have. Get the free TMPGEnc and IFO to convert AVI to VOB and you are flying!

The (Sonic)DX 4.01 I have came as a software bundle with the burner so I think in my case MAX would be an upgrade, but I don't think there is an upgrade so I'd be looking at $69USD for MAX as well.
Apart from personal preference, are there any technical issues/functions that would set one apart from the other? Where does DLA come into this if at all?
Oh and I've been using Nero Express Vision to burn mpegs to VCD. Can I use the DX or MAX for that too?
