I attempted to install the WiiKey and lined things up perfectly. It wasn't until I had soldered the first two points through that I noticed that I am missing a point. Maybe I am missing something, I do have one of the newer Wii's to be released. What am I doing wrong?

I am attempting to take a picture to show you, but I will "paint" edit this pic to try to explain

@standup85

You need to solder to the alternate soldering point. Which is the 5th leg from the left of the chipset. Look at the below diagram.

Make sure you have a D2B chipset which is labeled on the top of the chipset itself. It should be a D2B because I don't think any new D2C chipsets have any points taking off the board. But if it is a D2C chipset then the Wiikey(or any other Modchip) is not compatible with that chipset.

By the way if you change IMG to lower case img in the above BB Code then your image will show properly.

Ok, I have solder for 25 years and still did some stupid stuff to my Wii for my first install. I was anxious and started in the middle of the night with all the wrong tools. I have stripped a few braids from a wire and made my own wires. Unfortunately, I could not find my adjustable temp iron and used a bit more than 15 watt. So, I ended up soldering a wire down to the middle of the four connect points, went to bend it over and bang pow the copper lifted and tore the contact point right off of the board. Being decently adept at soldering I bridged a wire down and thought I caught the little sliver of copper trace line in the glob of solder. In fact, a multi tester from the point on the WiiKey to the firmware gives me resistance, so I must have made connection, right? Well, while finishing the other soldering points and doing a good but not great job I also tested and had resistance on the firmware chip, but no continuity from point to point on the WiiKey. This all sounds great, right. When I solder the two top points (big holes) I filled them instead of using a wire. I hope that is not a mistake.

I turned on the Wii and all the original games work, but the config disks do not boot up. I tried two types of DVD-R and burned at 2x. Is there any other way of testing before I tear it back out and try and figure out how I am going to solder to the firmware chip. Oh yeah, for the faint of heart cover your eyes, I put one drop of crazy glue on an edge to hold the WiiKey in place(I know I usually use my glue gun.....but could not find it).

Ok any thoughts before I start reworking this would be helpful. I am not eager to solder to the chip, are there any other solder points (left to right it is the second one on the WiiKey). Should I try to rebuild the contact point with radio shack trace stuff?

has ur wii been updated try using gcos then running the setup disk

I know your just trying to help but you should pay attention to the date that post are posted. If you did you would have noticed "bethere" post was made back in May 2007 and the 3.0 firmware didn't come out till the beginning of August. So evidently the issue they are having isn't due to the new 3.0 firmware.

I just finished moding my wii. I have wiikey and cyclops chips. So I decided to use both. Based on an idea from this thread, I soldered a serial cable (9 pins) with a female end to the wii board (using 8 of the 9 pins). I then installed the wiikey and the cyclops chips into a male serial cable end. The cyclops uses a bigger case because it contains a toggle switch as will. I didn't connect the (Z) reset point to the cyclops because I can unplug it to deactivate it. I tried the wiikey and it works fine, so wii board connection are fine. I yet to try the cyclops later. I simply unpluge one and plug the other one. If nintendo manged to disable wii's with modchips, then I simply unplug both and I have a vergin wii. I thank the guy for the idea.
Het is very smart.

The courier never turned up and the emails have now stopped!!!

Ok guys, this is my first post after reading everythign about installing the wiikey i went for it. Upon taking off the faceplate of the Wii (when you would insert the dvd at) and upon unplugging it one of the wires (the red one) broke off right outside of the plug (there is still some red in the plastic end)I am trying to pull that out now and i just restripped some of the rest of the red wire and will try to put that in the hole where the piece of red is stuck right now, but is this my best option? Or is there another way to do this, or will this even work?

Thanks

He does out of town modding if you pay for shipping/handling. My wii was a cut legged wii and had him mod it. Was done the day he received it and shipped back w/tracking number that night. He has pics up and everything, worth while to look at.
I payed $30 shipping there and back. He's located in Windsor Ontario.

I have seen him answer on other forums and he is saying that he has a heavy workload. How did you pay him? Has he acknowledged payment?

You can do a number of things.
a) buy a new plug, cut the old broken one off and install.
b) unclip the plug and reset the wires
c) solder the wires straight to the board
d) if there is enough wire on the plug end srip both ends and solder together then heatshrink/tape up.

Thanks for the response, in regards to it:

a) where would I buy a new plug for it?
b)I dont know what you mean by unclipping the plug and resetting the wires.
c) Soldering them straight to the board is not an option...i dont think, I think I may have mis spoken myself or not made it clear in the post.

My issue is (I did not solder the wiikey as it was way too small for me, I am going to have my friend who is an experienced solderer (sp lol) do it for me) But my issue is that upon removal of the faceplate, the part of the wii that you would insert the dvd into with the power/rest/eject button on it, when I went to unplug it from the rest of the system, there are two wires on the plug a red and a black. I somehow cut/snapped the red wire right where it goes into the plug...the black wire is fine, but the red is so that I haven't even been able to pull it out from the plug in order to try to use the stripped wire from the rest of the wire to put in. That being said if I can just get a new plug from somewhere that would be great i'd just straight up cut the old one off strip some wire and do it like that. But as I said not a clue where to get a plug like that or the size/model/etc

d)There is not enough wire coming out of the plug, its pretty much a straight across break right as it goes in...i've tried to use tweezers and a pin to pop.pull out the wire thats still in the plug but no joy

So my questions, if you can answer them are:

Did I make myself clear with what my problem was? I know that on boards if you're not posting pics it can become a hassle to try to figure out what someone is talking about.

If you do know what I mean, where can I get a plug like that? That would just make my life easier to cut off the remaingin black wire and then strip both and stick them both into a plug and go again.

Last one is that I am actually going to get a new all black replacement case for my Wii and from what it sounds like it would replace the faceplate so I wouldn't need to worry about it becasue the new case would have that plug and its wires in tact? (Even if this is the case though if you could let me knwo where to get a new plug that would be great because I'd like to have the option to go back to the white case worst case scenario)

Thanks again for the response, the funny thing is I did everything else just fine, it was that damned plug which seemed to me from the reading to be the easiest thing to do, just unplug it and set to the side for the time being lol...damnit haha

Hi

when I say solder it you could cut the plug off and solder to the points underneath the pcb where the little socket is soldered in. This will mean that you need to unsolder it when dismantling or changing case.

If you are getting a new Case then I would just leave the faceplate off for now, you can get to the buttons fine.

If you want to look for the plug check www.rswww.com it will be in there somewhere, sorry i dont have the code. Its probably a molex i think 1.25 pitch something like this: http://rswww.com/cgi-bin/bv/rswww/search...scape&Nr=avl:uk

postage is gonna be 50x the component though :(

Wow thanks for the link...yeah it def looks like a molex, i have no idea what the receptacle hosuing would be...would it just be 2? I'm not sure what that stands for/does so I'm unsure. If you know by chance that would be great. Also if I take a chance and get one, if I get the wrong one and use it will it hurt the system or just not work? I'm tempted to just get a few of them if I/ you are unsure and get some extra wire that way I'm not stipping back the original wire to nothing. Let me know, and thanks again.

Yeah they are pretty cheap so buy a few of them at different pitches
around the 1.25 mark and you are sure to get the right one. 2 pin is the type you need (2 wires) you will need to crimp the wires for insertion into the receptacle. You will be able to see if it fits in before stripping the wire back so no need for extra wire.

If you dont get the right one it wont matter as it probably wont fit anyway. The worst you could do is mangle the socket by forcing the connector in. you could shave bits off if they are too big as long as the pins inside the socket make contact you will be fine.

For the poster looking for someone to mod their wii, try craigslist, just post an ad in your local area and say you need your wii modded, I had 3 replies in one day and picked the closest guy to my house and bam, was done in 2 hours.

Thanks, I'll check it out so its always gonna be the 2 receptacle and its just the size of the pitch that I should be changing then huh? Well It looks like i'll be buying oh say about a $1 worth of plugs then lol and shipping like you said will be up there lol.

Thanks again, once I get some and play around with them ill let you all know what size.

EDIT**
I just sent an email to talismoon (the people I'm getting the case from) asking them what size plug the original dvd bezel used..hopefully they'll tell me, I don't see why they wouldn't as I did purchase one of their products and am just asking how to repair my original case so I will post the size/type after they send it back...again, hopefully haha

Carlinguk,

It is supposedly moddable, however it requires a new mod, something called the 30 wire mod or something to that extent which requires you to solder 30 wires.

http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/567554

I believe that is what you'll need to do

That is a d2b chip.
It is shipped with 3 of the legs cut (these lead to the solder pads the wiikey is soldered to). He is grinding the d2b IC down to get access to the tracks the legs lead to. He then rejoins them using a small bit of wire to the pads the legs would have connected to. Alternataly he could have just soldered the wires straight to the chip) the rest is a standard wiikey installation.

I use a 15Watt iron with a 0.025" pencil tip and have modded my Wii with the WiiKey using no wires at all. It works flawlessly and have had no problems. I have also modded several other consoles but will not get into that in this forum. If you are new to soldering try practicing on something else before attempting something as small as the contacts on consoles.
i bought my wiikey at modchipstore.com and it comes with soldering kit..how do i practice soldering b4 i do the actual soldering???
